PAGE 2 • SILÉTZ, OREGON August 1990 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR TO THE EDITOR: The recent passing of Mary Jean Downey, a former sch o o l-m a te and nearby neighbor in Portland for many years, was a very sad occasion for all of us. She was one of those people who always seemed to be doing the "right thing", caring for and successfully raising a good and model family. A "strong" person, she was described by the minister at her services as the "hub" of her family. The example she set in her lifetime is one that we all should strive to live by. M ary Je a n w as fortunate to have as a partner and husband, Everett--most people call him "Buck". His contribution to his fa m ily was e q u a lly commendable. and continues so. He was with his wife attending to her during a long period of illness spanning several year’s? Yet, at the same time he always found time to help other people in their time of need. Everett, down through the years, has been the equivalent of a "one-man Indian service" for countless numbers of people in diverse needs. I know of no other single individual who has done more. We will miss seeing Mary Jean with Everett at the local Fred Meyer store where we often ran Into each other shopping. The family of Everett and Mary Jean, also all successful people, have been left an indelible legacy from their mother -- an example of how a good family life should be lived, and a legacy for all the rest of us. Sincerely, Joe Lane Sr. DEAR EDITOR: I am currently on the Board of Directors, National Indian Council on Aging, for the Portland Area, representing the E lder Indians of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. I am deeply concerned about the fact that there is no action taken by our Tribes to send a delegation of our Elders to the up-coming National Indian Conference on Aging to be held August 15-16 at Nashville, Tennessee's Opryland Hotel!! I've contacted the appropriate Council people in December 1989, was present at the February '90 General Council announcing the "Doings" and did everything but tap dance down Main Street trying to get the right attention. Maybe I talked with the wrong Chiefs. I know that there are interested people that want to go - so why not send them?
