PAGE 6 - SILETZ, OREGON June 1990 METHADONE ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ By Walt Klamath, Outpatient Counselor NATIVE AMERICANS NEEDED FOR HISTORICAL PLAY W INNERS*W INNERS*W INNERS Recently I attended a Methadone Workshop. It was, at the very least, most interesting. The theory of Methadone treatment is to stabilize people that are addicted to opiates. These people that are addicted to Heroin will have a difficult time coming down from heroin. They have terrific withdrawals. With the use of Methadone, the withdrawal symptoms are relieved. Then to continue on the use of Methadone. Methadone, too, is an addictive drug, a slight pain killer and will produce Euphoria if a large enough dose is administered. The job of the Methadone clinic, is to give enough Methadone to eliminate the withdrawal symptoms but not enough to cause euphoria. There has been quite a bit of public controversy about the use of Methadone treatment because of abuse of the program by some clients. Some will sell the Methadone on the street because it brings a good price. But many programs are abused to some extent; this is something that is going to happen regardless of the numbers of controls on a program. Our society judges people on their productivity, reliability arid their family status. A person on Heroin is not "productive" nor any other quality that society is looking for. With the use of a Methadone maintenance program, ; these people can once again become productive workers and family members. Many with their initiative restored, return lq,community co^ege or other education programs. They must get their "fix" every day but many do eventually come off Methadone, too. One drawback of Methadone treatment is that it does not work for everyone, as is true of any treatment program. Some say it is treating a drug 'with a drug. This is true. Drug addiction is a disease. , Doctors treat heart disease with a drug, they treat diabetes? with a drug. Why not1 treat addiction with a drug? If something will make a worthwhile, productive citizen out of an addict, use it. There is no sure fire program for the treatment of those of us that have become addicted to chemicals. The AMA estimates that 96 out of 100 addicts will die from their addiction, one will end up in a sanitarium and three will recover. Father Martin, a popular proponent of AA, estimates that 1 out of 36 people that come through the door of AA will recover. I do not know any figures for the other programs but these are not good figures to start with. Front Row, Left to Right; Astra Windom, Hannah Feldner-Shaw, Mona Jones, Adam Trotta. The Oregon Trail Pageant, held annually in July in Oregon City, features the historical play "Oregon Fever". Native American actors or those wanting to try acting are needed for several small parts. The general cast is all volunteer. The play runs for 17 nights; a two night opening and three weeks at five nights a week. Rehearsals are scheduled in the weeks prior to the opening. Scenes require an adult, couple or possibly family group with two children to portray a Plains group (possibly Sioux); an adult male is needed to portray a Nez Perce at the Oregon Trail crossing of the Snake River. Proper Tribal Dress is important and will be provided if necessary. Technical assistance with language and dress is also invited. MCDONALD’S CONTEST WINNERS Every year the Ronald McDonald house holds a statewide contest to provide artwork for their calendar. For the past three years Mrs. Kenney's 5th grade class at Siletz School has entered the Ronald McDonald Calendar Contest. Every year over 1000 contestants enter this contest. The students draw pictures of what they like to do with their families. In the 1989 calendar, the class had six Winners out of the fifteen chosen from the State of Oregon. One of these winners was the grand prize winner. They included Jennifer Kriz, Ross Phinney, Angela Kosydar, Jim Stam, Tavie Molina and Alissa Miller. The 1990 calendar contest winners were; Jamie Retherford, Kristy Nephew, Robert Reed, Shyla Simmons, Tracy Breon and Lisa Buisman. This year, for the 1991 calendar, the class did exceptionally well. Nine winners out of the fifteen chosen were Siletz students. These winners were: Desire' Young, Christina Thompson, Hannah Feldner-Shaw, Adam Trotta, Zebuli Payne, Astra Windom, Adrien Nelson, Mona Jones and Melissa Pearson. Each of these students received a $50 savings bond from First Interstate Bank and McDonalds gift certificates to treat their families. Of the forty-five winners in the past three years, twenty-one have been chosen from Mrs. Kenney's 5th grade class! The Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for the families of seriously ill children. Being a participant in this contest is an effort to help families of sick children and make a real contribution on the part of Oregon Students. The ultimate winners are the Oregon and Northwest Children whose families need and use the Ronald McDonald House in Portland. "Congratulations"to all the Winners and "Thank You" Mrs. Kenney for helping and encouraging our children!
