Siletz, Oregon, April, 1983 — Page 3 Employees New Employment Program This year, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz will run their own Employment Program. Staff will serve eligi ble Native Americans from three locations; in Siletz, Salem, and a new location in Eugene. Please see the article in this paper for other details. Because our Pro gram has grown in size, and added a new location to serve Native Americans, new employees have been ad ded to the staff. T A M M Y BROWN Tammy Brown, a Choctah Tribal Member, is our new Employment Counselor stationed in Eugene. Tammy previously worked in the CETA Program for three years for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Spr ings. During her last assignment for Warm Springs, she was out-stationed in Eugene and served Lane, Jackson, Josephine and Douglas counties. She laughs about being “on the road” almost constantly. Tammy is looking forward to working for the Con federated Tribes of Siletz. Her goal is to give necessary services to Tribal Members, and other Native Americans in Linn and Lane counties who need employment assistance. Residents of those counties are encouraged to contract Tammy if they need employment assistance. SHANNON ELECTED OUTSTANDING MEMBER OF NPAIH Mary Alice Muncey was elected outstanding member of the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board at the Quarterly meeting held a t the D oric M otel in T acom a, W ashington in January, 1983. The Nor thwest Portland Area Indian Health Board is a non-profit recognized body of twenty- four Tribal representatives re p re se n tin g th irty -fo u r Tribes in the states of W ashington, Idaho and Oregon, which is dedicated to assist and promote the health need, concerns and service of Indian people. Mary Alice has been a Board member since 1978. She has represented the W estern Oregon Service Unit for five years as a delegate for the Siletz Tribe. She has been Sergeant of Arms for three years and a member of the Executive Committee for three years. CASE WELCH Shannon Case Welch was hired on April 7, 1983 as the Siletz EMployment Program Secretary. Shannon is a Siletz Tribal Member, born and raised in Lincoln County . She has a background of clerical work with the Employment Service Office in Newport, and she has also worked in the Employment component of the Ur ban Indian Council in Portland. Shannon will be stationed in the Siletz Area Office, but will provide assistance to Program Administration and the three Employment Counselors stationed in Siletz, Salem and Eugene. Shannon’s goal is to keep communications open between the three areas pro viding services to clients, and to assist our Employ ment Program in maintaining Department of Labor standards. Hunting & Fishing Meeting Held The Hunting & Fishing Committee held a meeting April 22, at the Siletz Central Office. At this meeting the Committee discussed a fish and game distribution plan for the upcoming year. It was the consensus of the committee to print a Tribal hunting and fishing questionnaire. 1. FOSTER HOME FOR TEEN NEEDED The Family Advocate is looking for a tribal family who would be willing to be a foster family for a seventeen y e a r old fem ale trib a l member. The foster place ment should start around the end of July and does not need to be in any particular geographical area. If you would be interested in pro viding a home for this very personable young person, please contact Doni White, 444-2514, for further informa tion. IDENTIFICATION OF INDIAN ADOPTIVE HOMES IMPORTANT Child Welfare Act sets placement preferences for Indian children who are released for adoption as follows: 1) a member of the child’s extended family; 2) other members of the child’s tribe; 3) other Indian families. In a small tribe such as Siletz, the frequency of tribal children being released for a d o p tio n w ill be low . However, if and when such a case should occur, it is im portant for the Tribe to have identified beforehand those tribal families who would like to adopt a child. Tribal families who would like to provide an adoptive home for Indian children should contact Doni White, Tribal Fam ily Advocate, 444-2514, for further informa tion.
