SILETZ HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP POLICY FY 81 A. Program Function: The Siletz Tribe’s Higher Education Scholarship Program will provide technical assistance, counseling and financial assistance to members of the Siletz Tribe pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education. Scholarships awarded through this program shall be used to supplement other sources of financial aid and shall be used to benefit as many Tribal members as possible. B. Eligible Uses of Scholarship Funds; Scholarship funds may be used for tuition and fees, books, supplies, subsistance and other expenses directly related to attendance at an accredited institute of higher education and shall be allocated in accordance with 62 BIAM (17). Such funds shall supplement other, regular sources of financial assistance available to any student enrolled in a degree program at an institute of higher education. C. Eligible Applicants: Enrolled Tribal members with one-quarter degree blood of federally recognized tribe or tribes who have been accepted as full-time students in programs leading to a degree from an accredited institution of higher education; have documented financial need; and have applied for all other available sources of financial assistance or agree to apply for such assistance before the beginning of the next term are eligible for funding undet this program and shall be given priority consideration in awarding scholarships. Priority also shall be given to Tribal members enrolled in undergraduate programs. D. Certification that the applicant is one-quarter quantum blood of a federally recognized tribe or tribes; Tribal Higher Education Grant Application; A copy of the official college need analysis processed through the College Scholarship Service or other appropriate forms used to compute financial need and any other necessary documentation from the appropriate financial aids officer indicating total budget, identified resources and amount of unmet need; Complete high school transcript or G.E.D. (for applicants who have not attended college or a university)? complete higher education transcripts (for applicants who are re-applying for assistance or who previously have attended college or a university); A letter from the applicant explaining her/his education goals; A covering letter with recommendation from the appropriate Tribal Area Office Supervisor for those students or potential students living within the Tribe’s 8 county service area; A covering letter with recommendations from the Education Specialist, Portland Area Office, Education Branch for students living outside the Tribe’s 8 county service area; A letter of acceptance from an institute of higher education; Certification from the Siletz Enrollment staff if the applicant is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians.
