concern to mans. As skiers look with disgust at bare
slopes, and fishermen unhappilv survey rocky stream
bottoms, energy and utility officials frown more wtth each
passing dry week. It was the driest November since 1JU5.
December has been the driest in KN) years, and the entire
fall will go down in history as the driest on record, with a
total of less than four inches in many areas
Since the weather has been cold, if dry. of late,
especially heavy energy demands are being noted. Ihus
the lack Of runoff waters to power hydro generation is
beginning to be keenly felt. <H more concern, however, is
the prospect for severe energy shortages in spring and
summe r because of little or no snowpacks. Ixsiming is the
prospect of industrial cutbacks or even closures, which
would add more economic damage to the effects of
rainlessness being experienced by the skung. fishing,
lumbe ring and farming industries in the region. "»nther
forecaster« are optimistic, though cautiously so. about the
possibility of a wet Januarv. If moisture comes it will
n e e d t o fall bv the bucket and v ery soon to offset the woe«
