Page 2— Vernonia Freedom Thursday October 29,1981 Medic answers irate letter To the Editor: In answer to ’the letter in last week’s Vernonia Freedom titled “Medics Faulted For Holiday Run”, you asked who does the maintenance of the ambulance? The people who volunteer their time to help the citizens do. The next question, why should a piece of equipment break down? I ask you, why does anything man-made break down? Why does a new car from the factory break down? 1 The ambulance volunteers in this town are some of the finest you will, find anywhere. The EMT’s pay up to $120 to take the classes; this amount comes out of their pockets, not yours! They spend 90 hours taking their class, their time, not yours! They attend drills and classes, their time, not yours! They respond to anyone’s need on their time, not yours. Instead of complaining, take the class and become an EMT. You can get up in the middle of the night and respond as they do. As for word getting out where the ambulance went, there are people who chase ambulances, fire trucks and police cars just to see where they are going. There are also people in this town who have the equipment to listen in on the emergency radio network and can hear what is being transmitted to the hospital, police and fire departments. I challenge you to become a volunteer in an organization, invest some of your time and brains to help detect problems before they develop. Fan belts can break, hoses break, even with the most careful maintenance. I, for one, am glad we have the fine, well-trained volunteer ambulance crew that we do. They are to be congratulated on their fine work and dedication. Shown here with his trophy and a check for $3000, Michener won the event with an LT-48 ball, rolling games of 176-192-215-213-200-160 plus a 240 pin handicap. Ridge Rider potluck The Vernonia Ridge Riders had a potluck Saturday night at the Scout Cabin. Their invited guests were the Forest Grove Ranch Riders. A highlight of the evening was the showing of a 15 minute film on wild animals of the vanishing prairie. Their next scheduled meeting is this Thursday at 7:30 at the West Oregon building. PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT The Columbia Education Service District Board will meet in special session on Wednesday, November 4, 1981, at 7:30 pm in the Columbia Education Service District office, 1290 Deer Island Road, St. Helens, Oregon, for the purpose of reviewing the ESD Resolution Programs for the 1982-82 Budget and considering ESD employee tuition reimbursement request. PUBLIC NOTICE Would anyone who has borrowed or been loaned crutches or canes please return them to the Vernonia Health Center. They are needed for other patients. funeral notice... RoseEsteen Rose Esteen of Vernonia, a retired teacher, died October 22. Her funeral will be held November 2 at Homan & Hankins Mortuary in Oregon City at 2 pm. She is survived by a daughter, Mary BOeger, from Gridley, California. Medic responds to letter To the Editor: I was shocked to read last week’s letter to the editor about Vernonia’s ambulance. Obviously these three people feel they could have done a better job by themselves -1 say let them try! Being on an ambulance service is a hard and sometimes stomach turning job and more often then not a thankless job at best. Bare in mind these people are volunteers, they don’t get paid for getting out of bed at all hours of the night or hours lost from leaving work to help people they probably don’t even know. The next time you get the urge to complain - just try walking in their shoes! I think you owe them an apology - and we owe them an applause. Paul Ramsey Mist-Birkenfeld Ambulance Assoc. Mets sponsor raffle The Vernonia Mets Ladies Softball team sponsored a raffle during last week’s VHS Homecoming game. The prizes, given away during halftime by Homecoming Queen Rhonda Wood, included a 7mm Remington Model 700 rifle won by Hank Haltman of Portland. The two other winners were: Larry Eager of Vernonia, a set of Focal 7x35 binoculars; and Fred Skidmore of Mist, a Buck folding hunter knife. Hank Haltman,, saying he had a rifle identical with the one he won, gave it to Jerry Sharar who, in turn donated $100 to the Vernonia Mets. To the Editor: We would like to extend our thanks to Janice and Newton Gray, Holly Johnson, and Lee Knowlton for saving the life of our son, Mason Wright Holmes, on Labor Day, September?, 1981. Mr. and Mrs. Donald S. Holmes Vernonia Auction set Mist-Birkenfeld Helping Circle will have their annual Auction & Program Saturday, November 7. The event will start at 7:30 pm. This is one-half hour earlier than previous programs. It will be held in the Mist gym with grab bags, baked food sales, a white elephant table and a variety of other interesting displays. GIRL SCOUT INVESTITURE Last Thursday night, October 22, Girl Scout neighborhood 4-2, Vernonia, held the annual investiture ceremony at the Washington Grade School gym. Approximately 145 Girl Scouts and their families were in attendance, including eight troups spanning grades 1-12. Grades 4, 5, 6 performed the candle lighting ceremony and recited the Girl Scout law. AU new scouts were given Girl Scout pins which are traditionally pinned upside down, until a good deed is done. DON’T BELIEVE IT Mister, don’t believe everything you hear, About there’s plenty of fish and deer. Us fellers here know it just ain’t so, They’re only out to get your dough. Hunters but on Saturday and Sunday, Find woods empty as a church on Monday. With four wheel drives, gun and bow, To shoot a buck, a fawn or doe. “There are many bucks in fine condition”, So says he from the game commission, I wonder where he’s been all year, I’m dad burn sure he wasn’t here. The fishin’ here has sure been fine, But all you do is wet a line, “Folks catch their limit”, so they say, But it must be some place far away. They won’t even answer a letter, Suggesting ways to make things better. Perhaps we should cut off their pay, Then they might listen to what we say. Their propaganda is a lot of bull, When we gonna get our belly full? Come on guys don’t let it pass, Let’s turn these feUows out to grass.
