The pre-school is a cooperative effort of local mothers who trade their time taking care of one another’s youngsters. City officials speculate that the loss of the federal night’s meeting, Vernonia is looking at a 12 percent cut in Federal Revenue Sharing money for Fiscal Year 1982. This will mean a loss to the city of almost program will also mean the end of state revenue sharing as well. $4000 next year. The letter further stated that it is very likely there will be no Federal Revenue Sharing at all beyond 1983, the last year the current Congress has budgeted funds through. Currently the city receives about $28,000 each year through this program. To date, no mention has been made regarding the state revenue sharing program, through which the city receives about $8000 Discussion was held, although no firm decision was reached, concerning the possibility of the city floating a bond issue to finance the purchase of $102,000 fire truck. Under current agreements the fire engine would be used by both the Vernonia City Fire Department and the Vernonia Rural Fire Protection District, although each is a separate taxing district. The proposal was tabled while the city and its attorney look into the pros and cons of the measure and the variety of ways it might be financed. A formal offer of $2500 per acre for ten acres intended to expand the existing sewage treatment facility has been made to the Land Acquisition and Sales Department of International Paper. As yet no answer has been received, “The ball is now in IP’s court,” says City Recorder Don Dunaway. The clear-cut operation on the city’s new landfill sive has been completed and the timber is currently being taken out. To date, the city has realized $3894 as its share of the seven loads removed so far. More than twenty more loads, including pole timber, are expected to be Haunted House opens tonight taken out before the operation is complete. Although the timber on the old landfill site has all been cut, the high lead operation necessary to remove the timber hasn’t begun yet. In other business, the council appointed Pat Larson to fill one* of the vacancies on the Planning Commission. The council has also decided to create an Emergency Vehicle Only parking space behind City Hall. Currently a ‘No Parking Anytime’ zone, the step was taken to provide needed parking space for both emergency vehicles, and when needed, for the personal vehicles of emergency personnel while they are on a call. Tonight is opening night for the Legion Hall of Horrors, Vernonia’s own Haunted House. The hall, .located behind the Western Oregon Electric building, will be open tonight from 7 to 10 pm and Friday and Saturday nights from 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm. Admission is $1.50. Proceeds this year will go toward the improvement and maintenance of the Rock Creek swimming pool. Volunteers have been hard at work converting the American Legion Hall to accomodate the troupe of ghostly visitors for their three night stay. The troupe, who will be catching the next broomsticks to Florida following their appearance here, have promised to do their best to curl your hair and cure , your lur igo. Don’t miss this opportunity to have fun and support your community. NEW GAS WELL?— Taylor Drilling, of Chehalis, Wa., is currently sinking a new well tap on the Hansen property near Mist. Working under contract from Reichhold Energy Corp., Taylor says his crew will drill 500-600 feet per day down to about 3000 feet. The 16 man crew, working in four man crews 24 hours a day, expects to be done this week. Shown here, Taylor’s crew is busy erecting the derrick that will hold and position the drill and egress line. Recently Norm donated two corc.v, of firewood to the Senior Center to heat their building this winter. He says, since the seniors need more wood, that he challenges anyone to match, in whole or in part, his generous donation.
