Page 6— Vernonia Freedom Thursday August 6,1981 Vernonia Grown by Bill Hansen While poking around in the garden last week, I found several worms crawling around that I hadn’t seen before. They were about an inch long, bright yellow and with about seven or eight narrow black bands around the body. I remembered reading about them before but I couldn’t remember where or when. After looking through all my reference booklets, USDA pamphlets and so forth to no avail, I called Chip Bubl, our county extension agent over in St. Helens, who informed me that the worm in question was probably the Cinnebar Moth. Of course, then I remembered reading about them, and that they were being released especially to dine on the Tansy plant. If you see them in your garden, don’t try to eliminate them, rather, pick them off your plants and drop them into a paper sack for transportation to an area where Tansy is growing. By now, your zucchini and other summer squash plants should be producing their first eating sized “fruits”. This year, try and pick them before they get over eight inches long. You will enjoy them more and, at the same time, they won’t get ahead of you, as they are heavy producers. Don’t worry, there will still be plenty for processing and preserving before the year’s first frost. Of course, this holds true for all home grown vegetables as they can be picked at the peak of flavor, and enjoyed minutes after leaving your garden. As your rows of peas, lettuce and other early crops finish producing this month, be sure and plant another late maturing vegetable in the same space after tilling. There are any number of fall maturing verities and there is no reason to let the ground get lazy. Beets, peas, carrots and most of the leafy green crops will provide fresh garden vegetables right into our mild Vernonia winter. SPOONFUL LIBRARY OF SUGAR AT “A Spoonful of Sugar” will be offered to children at the public library August 12 from 1:30 to 2 pm. Marge Dunay will read stories from the Mary Poppins series and Janet Lubbes will lead the children in games and songs. Mary Poppins story time will also be held August 19 and August 26 at 1:30. 50th GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Melvin E. Barrett, longtime Vernonia residents, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday, July 25 at Tigard, Oregon. The open house buffet reception was given by their children, Donna and Odell Pearson of Tigard, Dolores and Jack May and Eldon Barrett of Portland. The festivities were enjoyed by many relatives and friends. Mrs. Barrett had seven of her brothers and sisters in attendance, Wilfrid, Gerald, and Thomas Wolfe of Portland, Howard Wolfe of Independence, Genevra Hess and Aldyth Evenson of Portland, and Nora Burkett of Warrenton.
