FREEDOMFOTO Fire damages Fester cedar mill A fire wreaked havoc with Foster’s Cedar Mill early Monday afternoon. Units from State Forestry, two engines and an ambulance from Mist and two additional fire trucks from Vernonia were called out at about 1:35 pm when sparks from an incinerator apparently set a pole anchored to the mill’s main saw shed ablaze. The fire quickly shorted out a main electrical junction creating an arc of sparks that ignited the highly flammable roofing material used inside the structure’s loft. Although the mill’s owner, Ray Foster, was unable to accurately judge the extent of the damage when fire crews had finished putting out the blaze, it is likely damages will amount to thousands of dollars and at least ten days to two weeks of production loss as the damage gets repaired. The structure, made of corrugated aluminum, will need repair and the electrical system will have to be completely replaced, Foster said. The only injury reported occurred when Mist Fire Chief Norm Mueller was overcome by heat and smoke inside the building’s loft. According to department sources, temperatures inside the loft reached as high as 1600 degrees Farenheit while Mueller was inside. Medics and firefighters on the scene brought Mueller around . PAUL GORDON AWARD— The Paul Gordon Award, given each year to those eighth graders that display the best combination of scholastic and athletic ability and citizenship, were awarded this year to Mike Kelley (R) and Jessica Gonzales (L) at the Eighth Grade Award ceremony held June 3. Make it yourself wool contest begins Plans are underway for the 1981 Make It Yourself With Wool contest. The District 2 competition which includes those living or attending school in Clackamas, Columbia or Washington counties will be held Saturday, October 31 at the Beaverton Mall. Contestants between the ages of 10 and 24 are eligible to enter the competition. Pre-teen contestants 10-13 years of age enter the district contest only but winners of the juniors 14-16, and seniors, 17-24, will compete in January at the state contest at the Clackamas Town Center where state winners will be* chosen to compete in the national contest. Guys as well as girls are eligible. Last year’s national4 junior winner was Robert Hyatt of Ridgefield, Washington. Garments entered must have a minimum of 60 percent wool.
