■■■■ Page 2— Vernonia Freedom Thursday July 30,1981 Chamber of Commerce applauds Jamboree effort To the Editor: I Now that the 25th Vernonia Friendship Jamboree is history, there are some people who need to be recognized. First and foremost would be the . Vernonia Police Department, under the able leadership of Gordon McLaughlin, who did an outstanding job of keeping a very large crowd ; under control. There were very few ' “incidents” that I was aware of, and those were handled with dignity and restraint. Along with lawn enforcement services, our Vernonia EMT’s and ambulance crews responded quickly and professionally to all who needed their services. The owners of our local business establishments where large crowds Seniors need volunteers ' To the Editor: Notice to Nehalem Valley Seniors: We of the Vernonia Senior Center are cordially inviting every senior in our part of the Nehalem Valley to join us in helping to keep our center up to the standards we have attained in the past. Some of the financing for the center has been discontinued so a helping hand will be needed from each and every senior, and every hour you can spend at the center will be gratefully appreciated. There are many projects such as paper rolling, caring far flea market articles and sales, delivering meals on wheels, helping to serve meals during the lunch hours, and putting the lunch room in order for the next day. Come in and get acquainted, show your community spirit and help keep the center together. There is something to interest each and every one. While becoming acquainted, you can “sip” coffee, roll papers, play pool, attend painting, quilting (in season), read or just chat and laugh, but come. Membership fees are $5 per year per person if you would like to join, but you do not have to be a member to be a part of the many useful projects we have going. The center is open five days a week from 8 am until 4 pm. There is a good transportation system which we would like to have help supporting so that it can be kept in the community. Special recognition is necessary for Marv Meyers and the Jamboree Committee, who carried the overall responsibility of organizing and '71 grads plan reunion The Vernonia High School graduating class of 1971 will hold it's 10 year class reunion August 22, 1981, at the home of Rick and Shelly Curl. It will be a potluck affair from 3 pm to 8 pm. The class will also be inviting classmates from previous years and teachers. For more information, contact Marilyn Landers at 429-4543. VHS grads plan picnic The annual picnic of the Vernonia Society and VHS “Old Grads” will be held at Anderson Park, Vernonia, Oregon, August 16,1981. Please come and bring your friends. All former Vernonia people and families are invited. Bring your own picnic lunch. Coffee and cups will be provided. Registration starts at 10 am. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Washington Grade School cafeteria. COLUMBIA COUNTY FAIR AND RQPJSQ COURT Diane Van Winkle, of Vernonia, has been named a princess to the 1981 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Court. Diane, 19, currently works as a secretary for the Vernonia Police Department and as Municipal Court Clerk. A resident of Vernonia for the last eight years, Diane says her main interests are horseback riding, bicycling, volleyball, soccer and basketball. Diane plans to continue working for the police department and the Volunteer Ambulance Association when she receives her EMT I certification. She is also currently attending PCC where she is working towards an AA degree in Criminal justice. Diane rides an 11 year old mare of Quarter/Arab stock named Midnight as part of her duties with the Queen’s Court. Her favorite mare, Star, well known to many county residents, was retired last year due to age. Jamboree Pet Show results Everything from a horse to a spider came to the Pet Show and won a planning the whole affair. And to the ribbon. The class is Washington County Chris Behnke EMS and Oregon State EMS Chary Vandehey approved and will be coordinated by Miriah O’Dair Jimmie L. Floyd, EMT IV-Paramedic Katy O’Dair with Metro West Ambulance. The George Lubbes class will meet the Department of Julie Eckland Transportation standard and provide Gorgett Vigil inservice both on a paramedic Janice Hopkins ambulance and in the emergency Kristen Reynolds department of Tuality Community Jody Riley Hospital. The class will also prepare Stacy McDonald those interested in being able to take Leslie Collard the state and/or national certification Karl Parrow examinations.
