The ones you buy in the market for home use probably have been sprayed with a chemical that retards sprouting. This may not always be the case, but why take the chance? When you are ready to plant, cut each potato into four pieces, making sure there is at least one “eye” in each section. Each piece should be about the size of a small egg. The cut pieces should be allowed to dry or ‘‘cure” for a few hours before planting. Then, each piece should be dusted with a fungicide and planted about five or six inches deep, and about 18 to 20 inches apart. Then, mound the soil up slightly down the row for cover and pat the soil down lightly. Your new “shoots” of young leaves will begin to show themselves in two or three weeks if the soil isn’t too wet and cold. When we started gardening here in Vernonia, the first . thing we did was to travel over to St. Helens and find the county extension agent. There we obtained a wealth of information on gardening in the form of publications and pamphlets. We found information on everything from growing rhubarb to storing your hEirvest : in “basements, cellars, outbuildings and pits”. (USDA Home and Garden Bulletin No. 119.) Now, you don’t even have to spend your hard earned money on gasoline because the county agent travels to Vernonia every other week. A few years ago when we were forced to experience the “joys” of apartment living in Portland we found some ground not too far from where we lived! for a garden. The owner of the property was more than happy to let us use it for gardening, as he knew we would leave it in much better shape than we found it. So, if you find yourselves in the same circumstances, don’t despair. There are plenty of good garden spots around Vernonia that need only be tilled and given some love and care to produce all the fresh vegetables you’ll need this year. Start looking! Sweeping your garden when you till your soil and prepare your seed bed for the vegetables you want to grow, you ® 1 prepare a seed bed for all sorts of \^eds you don’t want to grow. Although you can’t see them, you have millions of weed seeds which are germinating; and, if left to grow, will soon crowd your vegetable seeds right out of the garden. As these weed seeds are very fragile at this point in time, even the slightest disturbance will kill out countless numbers of them. On the second or third day after planting your vegetable seeds in rows, take a light leaf rake, such as those familiar fan shaped bamboo or plastic types and very carefully and lightly rake down each row just enough to disturb the topmost layer of soil This will kill out all but the toughest of weeds. Remember, to stay far enough away from your vegetable rows so as not to disturb the seedlings there. In most cases, you can get to within two or three inches of the vegetable row. The weeds you leave in the row are easily hand picked later after your vegetables are well established. If you can, do this in midday when the sun is out. The sun will help you finish the job by baking the roots of the weeds you disturbed and exposed. ■ Now that the weather has finally settled down, you should be planting your potatoes. Potatoes are a cool weather crop, but they still like soil that is light and well drained. This doesn’t mean that you can’t grow a good crop here in Vernonia, but if your soil is too heavy with clay, the tubers may grow into some funny shapes.^This will also happen if .they are allowed to become too dry between watering, causing them to grow knobs. Many folks who planted potatoes early this year Eire now replanting because of- our late wet spring. Funeral services were held at the Fuiten Mortuary Chapel in Forest Grove Wednesday April 22 at 2 pm with her pastor, the Rev. Eugene Sabin of the First Christian Church of Forest Grove, officiating. Concluding rites and interment were at the Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove. Agnes Viola Latimer was bom at Grand Island, Nebraska, March 19, 1882, the daughter of John and Carrie Bacon Cooper. She was married May 30, 1901 to JEunes Latimer at North Platte and they spent all of their eEirly married years in the North Platte Eirea. In 4940 they csune to Oregon arid settled in Vernonia where they worked ori the custodial Staff at the Vernonia schools until retirement. In 1955 they moved to Hillsboro and then three yeEirs later to Forest Grove and she had made her home in the Forest Grove community since that time. She and her husband observed their 58th wedding anniverSEiry here before Mr. Latimer’s death in 1959. Following his death she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Clyde Evans, for 11 yesu*s before entering a local care center. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Forest Grove. Surviving are two children; a son, Floyd.. Latimer, Wellfleet, Nebraska and a daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Laura) Evans, Cornelius; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Two sons preceded her in death, Harry Latimer at Forest Grove in 1970 and Newton in his early youth years. Sunday, during the 11 am worship service a magic act with a Christian emphasis will be presented by Luke Wehner. The morning service will be followed by a pot luck with specisd recognition of John, Elaine and Johnny Young who plan to move to California due to a work transfer.
