Girls Scouts tour Cannon Beach
Eighteen fourth, fifth and sixth
grade Girl Scouts and their three
leaders went to Cannon Beach for a
weekend outing March 27, 28 and 29.
’The girls and leaders had been
working on the plans for the weekend
for some time and seemed to have
everything under control. Their meals
were all planned and what they were
going to do during the day was well
taken care. Something happened their
first night out though, that they had
not planned on but, as well prepared
Girl Scouts, they handled the
emergency with the calm and wisdom
that the Girl Scouts teach.
The girls were all inside, Cathy
Cieloha’s van when she noticed there
was smoke coming from somewhere.
As her girl Scout training taught her,
where there is smoke there is fire. She
immediately told the girls to get out
of the van and to get away from the
vehicle. The van was parked next to
the “A” frame cabin that they had
borrowed for the weekend from leader
Linda Dowels good friend.
The van was pretty much engulfed
in flames by the time the fire
department arrived. Leader Marilyn
Fennell had observed an extra gas can
on the back of the van and promptly
removed it averting an even bigger
fire. The van unfortunately, was
completely ruined but the girls were
all safe and no one was hurt. There
were a few things in the van that were
lost including Cathy’s purse. The
girls took up a collection and bought
her a new wallet. The “A” frame was
singed' a little, but suffered no real
damage.
The rest of the outing went as
planned except for one minor
incident. The girls were taking a walk
along the beach and Cathy had left
her jacket lying somewhere along the
way, when she came back to retrieve
it she found that a dog had decided to
relieve itself on it. Poor Cathy, what a
weekend!
The girls and leaders would like to
express their heartfelt thanks to the
Budges for the loan of their van and
Bill Crabtree for driving down with it
and bringing the girls home.
The weekend was a real experience
for the girls and was handled with
expertise by everyone involved.

The dedication of the fire hall

It was in the nineteen fifties-
Nearly thirty years gone by,
We thought of the fire danger
When things were parched and dry.
Everyone helped in this project
In a number of different ways,
Some donated loads of cement
Which helped to fill our four bays.
So a group of men got together
To form a fire protection board,
And collect a sum of money-
Whatever we could afford.
Some delivered rock and sand
And various other things,
They did it out of kindness
And not to pull some strings.
It was slow in getting started,
Some directors moved away,
But the records lay in thé court house
Where they are to this very day.
Others donated their labor
And helped any way they could,
Some doing carpenter work-
Others, cleaning up scraps of wood.
The fire bureau lay dormant
For nearly twenty-six years.
People forgot about fires
And gradually lost their fears.
We were helped by so many different folks
That I will not try to keep tally.
For if I did, I might leave some out,
And my name would be “Mud” in the valley!
Along in the later seventies
More people decided to roam,
And some of them decided
That here they would build their home.
Now in spite of our donations and help,
This might seem a bit funny,
Before our hall was completed-
We simply ran out of money.
And as more young families moved in
They were not out for perfection,
But realized we needed medical care,
And also, fire protection.
Well, that stopped us in our tracks
And if effected one and all,
Because of a lack of money
To finish our fire hall.
A group of these young people
Took classes on emergency cases,
And how to administer first aid
When it was needed at different places.
So some of our fireboard leaders
Went to the county court,
To find out the real reason
Why our funds were cut so short.
Our biggest need was an ambulance,
A safe one, and in good condition,
So we could transport the sick and injured
To a hospital, and a physician.
They had some hot discussions
And our finances remained pretty slim,
But they called another meeting
At Mist - to be held in the gym.
We finally got a used one,
And it has worked out great,
Which proves out the old theory-
Things come to those who wait.
This time there was a big crowd
Folks came from a long way
The commissioners from St. Helens
To hear what we had to say.
Well, we got the ambulance going,
But, my friends, that isn’t all!
We needed a place to put it-
And, also, a fire hall.
There were also state representatives,
It was a long trip that they made,
But they drove over the mountain
Intent on giving us aid.
So people got together
And went on a hunting spree,
To find a good location
Where our fire hall should be.
In just a very short time
We were again in good condition,
For we received ten thousand dollars
From the Columbia County Commission,
We searched up and down the valley
And would have like to build on a hill,
Then the Olympic Forest donated a site
Right close by their sawmill.
This enabled us to finish our hall,
.And to achieve our long sought object
So I want to give thanks to everyone here
Who has helped us along with this project.
They also donated lumber
And gravel, and that isn’t all-
They gave us a number of other things
Needed in building a hall.
Now to come to my conclusion-
