Thursday March 26,1981 Vernonia Freedom—Page 9 Chimney fire caught Vernonian named to State Board of Education A chimney fire, the apparent result of faulty remodeling, erupted Tuesday night in a wood stove at the home of Jim and Lori Walters at 1008 Weed Ave. Although there was little if any damage to the Walter’s home, firefighters said the fire could have been much worse. “They were very lucky,” said one. Lori, who was home with their two year old son, Joey, at the time said, “First, the chimney pipe broke and then smoke started coming out and the smoke alarm went off. I ran to my neighbor’s, Myrtle Liens’ house, and called in the alarm from there.” According to fire investigators when the wood stove was installed the remodeler apparently neglected to properly seal off the chimney that was already there. When firefighters got into the attic and got a good look at the situation they noticed that embers were already building up in the space between the chimney pipe and the wood surrounding it. These embers would have eventually burst into flames causing, as one firefighter put it, “All kinds of trouble.” Proper installation would have also included a sheet metal plate between the chimney and the wood surfaces to protect against just such a build-up of heat. Jim Walters won’t find out about the fire until he gets home from work Wednesday morning. Lori decided not to call him at his job at the Blitz- Wienhard brewery in Portland because, as she put it, “It would only make him worry unnecessarily. ’ ’ “It’s ironic, Lori added, “but we just got our fire insurance two weeks ago.” A former Vernonia grade school teacher, Wallace W. McRae, has been reappointed and a Portland resident appointed to the state Board of Education by Governor Vic Atiyeh. Wallace W. McCrae, now living in Pendleton, and Thelma R. Elliott, Portland, will serve four-year terms on the seven member board. Both are subject to Oregon Senate, confirmation. McCrae’s new term and Mrs. Elliott’s term will both begin officially July 1 and end June 30r 1985. The respective current terms of McCrae and Sedley N. Stuart, Gresham, both end June 30. Board duties include establishing standards for Oregon public schools. It also adopts guidelines for community college operation and negotiates agreements on the state’s behalf for receipt of federal education funds. McCrae, a board member since 1977, is former president (1962-74) of Blue Mountain Community College, Pendleton. He has served as public school superintendent in both Pendleton (1949-62) and St. Helens (1944-49). In Vernonia he began as an elementary school teacher (1929-31) and then became a teacher and coach (1933-36) and later superintendent (1936-44), both at Vernonia Union High School. From 1975-80 he was director of the Oregon Educational Seminar, Washington, D.C. He is a 2nd Congressional District representative on the board. A Lebanon High School (1927) and Oregon College of Education (1929) graduate, he has also studied at Willamette University (1931-32).
