Thursday March 5,1981 Page 2— Vernonia Freedom Resident questions Mist gas field royalty split To the Editor: The discovery of natural gas in Columbia County has created a lot of problems, one is the distribution of the windfall lease monies and royalties. We, the people of Mist, have not as yet received one dollar from the gas, except our own lease money, which is one dollar an acre per year. As of this date all the gas has been on county, Fiber or Crown land, we call this smart gas, so we attended a meeting with hopes of a little justice, only to find that out of a total of $2,800,556.56, we were to receive only $518.00, which has now been, increased to $1,586. We called a meeting and received $10,000 to finish our fire hall. The only one that tried to help us was our county commissioners, Carolyn Magruder and Ted Bugas, and we wish to say a special thanks, also for the bill that they are sponsoring, for the people of Mist-Birkenfeld and the county. We have asked for an amendment to the bill, No. 2620, to give half of the money to Clatskanie, Vernonia and the Mist-Birkenfeld Fire District to be distributed in accordance to their needs. The other half would be divided equally between the schools PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT There will be a Parent Advisory Council meeting on March 9, 1981 at 7:30 pm in the Washington Grade School Lounge. We urge all Title I Parents to please attend this meeting. We will be electing officers for the coming school year 1981-82. PUBLIC NOTICE in the districts, and the county for a fair and equal distribution. At a meeting with State Rep. Carolyn Magruder on February 27 in Salem regarding bill No. 2620, which was attended by five county school superintendents, Oren Tweet and business manager from Clatskanie, Henry Anderegg, Mayor of Vernonia, Jerri Hemeon, Vivian Reynolds and PUBLIC FORUM myself representing Mist-Birkenfeld the county school superintendents asked Carolyn Magruder that she withdraw the bill, which caused very mixed emotions, especially towards ~ Commissioner Marian Sahagian, who ‘ is defending the bill and the people in this end of the county, in opposition to Scappoose, St. Helens and Rainier. Do they represent our interest and will? In 1979, our State Senators (Hallock and Fadely) introduced a bill to repeal capital punishment (SB474). Just the session before, 68 percent of the voters - you and me - approved capital punishment. Even though SB474 passed in the Senate; thankfully, it failed by several votes in the House. Now, capital punishment has been thrown out by six persons in the Oregon Court System. Is the democratic system of majority rule no longer working in our country, or specifically, in Oregon? The democratic process is supposed to represent the vote of the people; yet, the outcome of our vote for capital punishment is really PUBLIC NOTICE Fishhawk annexation meeting set Under the provisions of ORS 198.850, notice is hereby given that the Board of County Commissioners intends to hold a final public hearing on the 25th day of March, 1981, at the hour of 10 am in the Extension Meeting Room, main floor, Columbia County Courthouse, St. Helens, Oregon, regarding Order No. 4-81 declaring its intent to proceed with the annexation to the district of Fishhawk Lake RFPD Estates-Mist-Birkenfeld Annexation. If Oregonians question whether or not their votes have meaning, I say we have good cause for concern! The outcome of capital punishment legislation, from the present Legislative Session, will tell. We have a post office box to receive letters if you want to be heard concerning capital punishment reinstatement. It is a proven deterrent, and you deserve to be heard! Letters received will be delivered in Salem to those Senate Justice Committee members whom have forgotten the majority vote for justice. It is their responsibility to represent us - we elected them for this purpose! At this meeting the Council will discuss the probable need of raising water and/or sewer rates beginning July 1,1981. Listed below is a comparative chart showing water and sewer rates in other Columbia County cities. Clatskanie: $9.00 for 3,000 gallons of water, $7.00 for sewer. Scappoose: $6.00 for 3,000 gallons of water, $6.50 for sewer. Rainier: $8.10 for 3,000 gallons of water, $7.50 for sewer. St. Helens: $4.50 for 3,000 gallons of water, $6.00 for sewer. Vernonia: $5.50 for 4,000 gallons of water, $4.00 for sewer.
