INA TIMES, Willamina, Oregon, Wednesday, January 24^_1973_Page_5 Willamina conquers Warriors The Willamina Bulldogs elim i nated one more competitor in their effort to latch onto the lone top spot in the Yawama League Friday night by defeating Amity 77 to 34 in a game played in Amity. " Willamina was never threatened in the contest which saw four Bulldogs score in double figures. Leading scorer for Willamina was Dan Barnes with 23 points. The best an Amity player could do was the 16 counters thrown in by Allan Aschim. Willamina took a commanding lead 22 to 4 in the first quarter and then never let go. The best Amity could do was in the fourth period when they lost the period by only one point 14 to 13 to the Bulldogs. But all of this was too little much too late for the losing W arrior cause who suffered bad ly at the hot hands of the Bull dog club. After being overwhelmed in the first quarter the W arriors man aged to increase their first quar ter production by seven while holding Willamina to two less than in the first quarter but this was not enough to do much good and Willamina retired at halftime with more points than Amity would get in the entire game. Score at the half was 42 to 15. The third period was a repeat of the first two with Willamina scoring at will and everything going wrong for Amity. Wil lamina was able to pick up 21 more points in that period while holding Amity to 6. At this point the Bulldogs had increased their lead to 42 and were leading 63 to 21. The fourth quarter was the only competitive one in the game but by then the Amity ship had sunk and all the W arriors could look forward to was next time. Final score was Willamina 77, Amity 34. Although his team lost the match Amity Coach Jeff Howard de fended his squad saying ‘ ‘we knew that was going to happen even before we got on the bus. On the mat I feel we broke even.” Willamina outscored the War riors three to two with pins. Scoring pins for Willamina were Jay Hill, Vince Justen and Gary Gahan. Pinning for Amity were Joe Robles and Mark Drader. Leading the Spartan attack was Jerry Huntley who reeled off 29 points for the winning cause, while Lee Hanson contributed 21 points for the losing Nestucca ef fort. Although Sheridan won by only eight points the outcome was nev er in doubt as Sheridan led throughout the game. The only time the Bobcats outscored the Spartans was in the final period when the added 13 counters to only 9 for Sheridan, but it was a futile effort for the outcome was already evident. The first quarter was a close one for the two teams, but Sheri dan managed to grab onto a one point lead 15 to 14 when the horn sounded to call an end to the first eight minutes of play. Sheridan was able to increase their lead to four during the second quarter by outscoring the Bobcat five 14 to 11. The score at half time was Sheridan 29, Nestucca 25. During the third period the hometown team shot ahead of Nestucca by outscoring them by eight points 18 to 10, increasing their lead to 12 points as the scoreboard showed them leading 47 to 35 going into the fourth Sheridan and Willamina battle it out in the wrestling ring in the two school’s match. and final period of play. Nestucca was not ready to toss in the towel yet though as they managed to stage a comeback in the fourth period and whit tled the Sheridan lead down to 8 points when the final horn went off. Sheridan is now in the middle of the standings tied with Amity for second place with a one win, one loss league record. Nes tucca meanwhile remains nestled in last place tied with Banks and Sherwood. Part of the Nestucca loss came from their numerous weight for feits to the Spartans. The Spar tans were also able to defeat them in nine weights to clinch the victory. Getting pins for the Sheridan squad were A1 Cruickshank, Steve Harris, Doug Monroe, Mike Sny der, and John Evans. Sparts trip Dogs Although Willamina outscored Sheridan in pins, three to two, the Spartans were still able to defeat the Bulldogs by two points 30 to 28 in last week’s Yawama League wrestling. Scoring the pins for Willamina were Jerry Brandon, Gary Gahan and Bill Willis, while A1 Cruick shank and Dick Hoover had pins for the victorious Spartans. W illamina grade school trips Sherwood The Willamina seventh and eighth grade wrestling team de feated Sherwood 31-14 in their first meeting of the season. It: was the teams eleventh straight dual meet triumph since the program was started last year. Highly respected state-wide the Willamina team is led by eight returning wrestlers from last year’s undefeated squad. Those returning are Josh But ler, a gold medal winner in tbe junior Olympics championships; Wayne Brown, bronze medal win ner in the Mt. Scbtt junior Olym pics championships; team cap tain and fourth place finisher Steve Delker; Mike Hill who qua lified at Tigard, but was unable to make weight at the champion ships in Hillsboro; and Kelvin Wasler an adopted Korean with Yawama League standings Yawama League standing at the end of the first two weeks of play found Dayton, Willamina, and Yamhill-Carlton all sharing the top berth with identical 2 wins, no loss records. Steve Delker was chosen ‘‘Wrestler of the Week” for his leadership and for pinning his opponent in 44 seconds. Five basketball players also wrestled Sherwood opponents and Spartans tame Lions in cage mix Without the aid of either a chair or a whip the Sheridan Spartans tamed the Jefferson Lions 74 to 50 in a non-league battle played in Jefferson Tuesday, January 16. Led by the twin efforts of Jerry Huntley and Tim Papen who scored 17 and 15 respectively for Sheridan, the Spartans were never headed as they worked their magic on the Lions. Leading the Jefferson cause was Bob Kieth the game’s high scorer with 19. Jumping off to an early lead in the first period Sheridan was out in front of the Lion squad by five points going into the second period, 17 to 12. But you ain’t seen nothin’ yet as the old saying goes and Sheri - dan didn’t just sit around on their laurels in the second quar ter outdistancing the Lions 19 to 4 in the period and blowing the game wide open and giving the Sparts a 36 to 16 lead to take into the halftime locker room. Both teams came on like gang- busters in the third period scor ing a combined total of 39 points in eight minutes of time. Of those 39 points 22 of them belonged to Jefferson with the other 17 going to the visitors. This third period burst allowed Jeff to cut the Sheridan lead down to 15, but they still trailed 53 to 38. In the second period Stayton bat tled back, but was still unable to catch up with the Willamina club. With superior play be hind them the Bulldogs increased their lead by four more points and led by eight at the end of the half, 30 to 22. But the tide changed in the third stanza as the Eagles came back from the dressing room at half time ready to reek havoc on the Bulldogs. This they did out- scoring Willamina 17 to 8 in the third period managing to pull in front of the Bulldogs by one point 39 to 38 when the third period drew to a close. The fourth period found nobody leaving the Stayton gym as both teams did battle with Willamina Listen to KPDQ 9 a.m. it * , weekdays faired very well. They will be allowed to continue to wrestle as long as it does not interfere with basketball It took an overtime to do it, but the Stayton Eagles defeated the Willamina Bulldogs 56 to 46 Tuesday, January 16, to hand the Bulldogs their first loss this year. Pacing the Bulldogs was Dan Barnes who wound up with 20 points for the Willamina cause. Leading the Eagle attack was Rick Kauffman who tossed in 25 points to lead, all scorers in the nonconference tiff. Willamina jumped off to an early 12 to 8 lead in the first quarter as they appeared t ^ b ^ m a d ^ winning the period 8 to 7 but falling one point short of victory when the horn sounded ending regular play with the score knot ted at 46 all. Spurred on by an excited home town crowd the Eagles came back in the overtime and blew the Bull dogs out of the gym scoring 10 points while holding Willamina scoreless. The final score was Stayton 56, Willamina 46. Although his team lost, Wil lamina Coach Don Brostrom was pleased with his team saying “ if we were going to get beat I guess I don’t mind if it’s by a team like Stayton. Last year they had two all-staters.
