The rain was the first good rain in months, measuring .82 of an inch by 9 a .m . Thursday. The closure on logging oper ations was Immediately lifted, effective 9 a .m . Thursday. There was no Immediate new: on the hunting season, which has been postponed a week. There is some public sentiment in fav or of the governor opening the season at the regular time any way, but no word has come out 9 0 DAYS t\ f! W it !♦ FENIEDE GIVEN 90 DAY SENTENCE BY JUDGE Kieth B. Feniede was senten- ed by Judge Belloni in Circuit Court this week to 90 days in jail for non-support of his fam ily- Feniede was indicted by the Grand Jury of Curry County. Charged with non-support and disertion of his wife and family, he was extradited from Mont - esano, Wash, and brought here.- D istrict Attorney Ed Ackley said that " this is the first of a se rie s of charges that are being placed against fathers who do not support their fam ilies. The Welfare Commission has to support them, and as a r e sult money is diverted that could be used to support elderly p e o ple. ” ************** BRUINS PLAY THE BIGGEST SALMON REPORTED so far was this huge one caught by G. D. Patee, who recently moved here from Maple ton, Ore. The fish, a 37 pounder, is as big as Mr. Patee's grand daughter, Tina, and Gordon, who are the children of W. G. Smith of Brookings. The Bruins were getting their practice session s in this w e e k stressin g pass defense and the handling of the ball. Several verj costly fumbles gave the Bruins a rough time against Illinois Val ley last Saturday, when the local boys could have won by a bigger margin. Ace fullback Ron McCabe was nursing a bad back Wednesday, and stayed home from s c h o o l . Game time was set for 2 p .m . ************ Collom to move to city Collom Chevrolet, who is now operating out of Smith River, but with a Brookings franchise, will m o v e in t o the spot form erly occupied by C. Ed Dempsey. Dempsey was forced to close his Dodge-Plymouth a g e n c y , due to ill health, effective on October 1. Most local hunters, and there are loads of them are c r y i n g softly in their suds this week, as Gov. Holmes postponed open ing of the deer season until Oct. 5. The proclamation was announced Tuesday. Holmes was acting on the advice of state forest officials who thought that they would b e playing with fire to let the hunteri go into ihe woods at this tim e. The long range weather forecast doesn't look especially favorabli either, with more hot dry d a y s predicted. *********** The teachers of Curry County will meet in their annual inservic« program at Gold Beach on Sept ember 30th and October 1st, and with them to a ssist in the improv ement of our school program wil be a number of experts in the various phases of education. There will be no school in the Brookings-Harbor system on Monday or Tuesday. As over-all speaker for the group, Dr. Benjamin Simmons, Supervisor of Curriculum forth«. State Department of Education will be speaking on the title of "The N ecessity for Curriculum Change in Oregon". His second topic will be "What Constitutes a good Curriculum". Among the consultants who will be present to work with the High School teachers are th e following leaders in education. Dr. A. A. Esslinger, Dean of the School of Health and Physical Education, University of Oregon Dr. W. Sampson, Director o f T e a c h e r Education, Southern Oregon College of Education; Dr. O. Schaaf, Counselor, Science Teaching Improvement Program; Dr. Norman Oswald, Assistant Professor of English, University of Oregon; Mr. C. D i e b e l , Counselor Science Teaching Improvement Program, University of Oregon; Dr. T. Yerian, Head of the D e- of the governors office. The rain cleared the air, and settled the dust, and took most of the lily workers out of the fields for the time being. The rainfall reported at Gold Beach was 1.09 inches by th e Forest Service. Snow Camp had only .62 inches, so it was fig ured that the rain lessened as it went east. However, rain was falling all over western Oregon. He will be assisted by Mr. Milton G rassell, School Specialist for that department, and Mr. Larry Butler, Regional Director from the Ashland Depository Film rent al. These meetings and all the others are to open to the public and the system would c e r t a in ly welcome the attendance of any Interested person. Irene McPhersen. The two attended the World Orchid Show in Honolulu last week. Growing orchids is a hobby of Mrs. Jack- son. The gal at the right wasn’t identified, but it is assumed that Mrs. Jackson didn’t bring her back with her. ELATED—are these rally leaders and other Brookings-Harbor school youngsters, as the Bruiné won their first contest last Saturday, dumping Illinois-V alley by an 18-13 count.
