W illiam s, sta te highway e n g in e e r told A rm stro n g t h a t the e n tire p ro je c t is sla te d for co m p letio n by 1961, b u t g i v e n fav o rab le w eath er conditions that d ead lin e m ay be b e a t. W illiam s a lso sa id that the c o st of the highw ay h as gone up from the o r i g inally e stim a te d $16,000,000 to $ 18,000,000. T his will be som e of the h e av ie st highway c o n stru c tio n e v e r u n d ertak en in the U .S. sa y s W illiam s, co stin g about $600,000 a m ile . COMMENT: I t re m a in s o u r opinion that w h atev er the new highw ay c o s t s —th at is m oney well sp en t. The s ta te will b en efit from in c re a s e to u r ist b u s in e s s . The county will b en efit from being m o re c l o s e l y linked to g e th e r, but the people will b en efit m o st of a ll, by having a c c e s s to the P acific o cean with ail Its m any b e a u tie s.
