Brookings-Harbc.- Pilot I h u rsd ay, F eb ru ary 2 1 , 1957 Brookings, Oregon JV Team also Split Illinois Valley - Bruins Split Games Brookings w ound up their regu lar season play this past week end, by splitting two close games w ith a good Illinois Valley squad. Both games w ere decided in the last second, w ith IV taking the conference win by a 41-40 score, edging out a w in in the seasons in an overtim e, and the Brooks finale by a 52-49 count after tra il ing 30-17 at half tim e. F riday night on the IV court th e Brooks took an early lead 15-13 at the first q u arte r mark, w ith Bill W orkinger hitting for seven and Ron Bullock and Ron L ane each four. A good solid defense kept Illinois Valley from scoring a bucket in the second q u a rte r and the B ruins carried a 28-16 lead at half time. B ut scoring for the Brooks went into a nosedive from then on. They could only m ake a total of nin e points in the next two q u a rt ers, w hile IV m ade 22 points to catch them at the wire. Brookings th ey w ere ahead by a 38-37 when th e score was actually knotted at 37 all. W ith 1.15 seconds left G ary G alam bos m ade a free throw to p u t the Brooks ahead—but some BREAKS LEG IN FRANCE R ichard Cam pbell w rites his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Campbell, th a t he broke a leg near LaRo- chelle, on the w est coast of France an d had to drive his truck some fifty m iles fu rth e r before he had it attended to. In the wild overtim e Dan S lanaker m ade his only basket of th e night putting IV ahead 39-37. T hen the Bruins tied it up again, before a technical foul, called on Stan G ribble for talking to th e coach, and another T foul was called on a coach, w ith L arry Reston m ak ing the shot to win. The game S aturday night was just the reverse, w ith IV getting off to a big lead, only to lose it in the last seconds. T here 30-17 lead vanished by the end of the third q u arte r w hen the Brooks scored 19 points to trail by only four. W heeling along the Brooks hit 16 more in the final fram e to win going away. Scoring in the two gam es w as pretty evenly divided as usual. Rorf Bullock hit 12 on F riday and 15 on Saturday to lead th e w ay in both games, W orkinger had nine and 10, Lane had seven and eight Stan G ribble had nine and four, Anderson had th ree and eight. Dale R utledge h it four on Saturday night. w hile she was in the Josephine G eneral hospital. Doctors recom mended treatm en t of her eyes for exophoria, and the Elks h a v e offered to pay expenses for an operation to correct th e condition. The little girl is one of seven children. This past week end was no exception, as they let IV push them around on Friday, winning 44-43 p retty much as they pleasedt and then playing on the Brook floor th e JV ’s w altzed away w ith an easy 52-39 victory. F riday the ju n io r Bruins could not do anything right, a n d w atched IV take a 14-7 first q u a r te r lead from w hich they w ere never headed Jim Cam pbell hit for 10 points to lead th e locals, w hile Fred Anderson, Bob Berger, and G ary Midwood all netted sev en points. Looking like a different team behind the first q u arter, trailing S atu rd ay the young Bruins w ere 18-11, but wham, they came to held the IV squad to a m ere two halftim e 29-26. In the third period the Brooks life scoring 18 points to lead at points, leading at the tu rn 40-28. Scoring well was Dale Rutledge, who d id n ’t play Friday.
