FAUERSO, Salesman Phone 3311 Cop'r;"’’*, 79'0. r Brookings Requests ioi lake l o p Priority-at June Meeting Members of the County Court unit of the Oregon Coast Associa tion met with the state highway commission, at its June meeting requestjng that 101 take top priority in the allocation of funds outside the interstate highway system. The mult-billion dollar highway hill which has been pas sed by Congess places U S 9*) throughout the state and US 30 to Portland in this system. The county court unit, headed by Judge James Harrison of Coos county, represents all seven coast al counties traversed by 101. Judge Harrison, in his opening s'atement to the commission, stated the urgent need for elimi nation of the bottlenecks which hamper the flow of tourist traf fic at both the north and south ends of the state. The unit asked the commission to let them know how much state and frederal funds would lx- ava’l- able this year. It is planned to push this request through to an early and favorable answer. There’s a story that a ear had been seen parked, for over a month, at the State Line airport. It was deep covered in dust and many who saw it thought it be longed to someone who had flown away and just parked it there. Investigation brought up the fact that it belonged to Gus Schniedau of Gold Beach and had lieen stolen from his garage while he was off on a trip, hence had not been reported missing. New Hope For Chrome Industry The federal government has ex tended the time of its purchase of chrome an additional two years. The orgit|ial plan of purchase was to expire June 30, 1957. For the operators of Oregon’s chromite mines this extended pur chase program is one of the best things that could have happened to the industry reports Hollis M Dole, director of Oregon's depart ment of geology and mineral in dustries. Before this announce ment was made Dole feared that many of the industries would have to shut down and reopening at a later date would lx* expen sive or even impossible in som° cases. In the past two years Oregon's chromite mines, which number near forty, have done nearly 500,- 000 dollars worth j f husjnes3. Doh* also reports that for some sections of southwestern and cen tral Oregon the economy is de pendent upon the ch »rem .ndustry 7/d "Wtonc »1 V.
