O th ers in th e com m unity too, have urged the election of D oane d u rin g th e com ing election. W e have been inclined to trea d a little easily, this being o u r first election in th is area. T h e re is no point in o u r com ing o u t and m ak ing a lot of noise in th e election, fo r exam ple. N o rm ally w e’re not fence riders, as th a t is about th e m ost u n co m fo rtab le ¡>osition we know' of. B ut we a re going to assum e th a t position in th e city ra ce for several reasons. H ow ever, on a co u n ty w ide level w e’re going to go along w ith C h arlie IXiane, and h e re ’s why. F irst, D oane is m ak in g a real cam paign out of it. T h a t alone is to I k » highly com m ended. He has been in th e B rookings- H a rb o r a re a o ften d u rin g th e past week, actively seeking th e office. H e isn’t co n ten t to sit hack and hope for th e best. Secondly, D oane is a ’’com m on sen se” candidate. He w ill keep a lig h t w a tc h on e x p e n d itu re s in the county. An exam ple of this is th e p roposed new' C o u rt H ouse building in Gold Beach. D oane has this to say about it “ Ix 't’s w ait un til we have th e m oney in the cash re g is te r”, before building it. T hird, D oane is m ore o r less independant. H e isn’t backed by people w ith axes to grind. F inancially too, h e’s m ore or less independant He says to this th at “the m oney I spend in this electio n belongs to m e,” and ” 1 have m ade no p o litica l p ro m ises.” L ast, but p erh ap s m ore im p o rta n t from th e so u th ern end of th e co u n ty s stan d p o in t, D oane could conceivably give us w hat we in th e so u th ern end feel o u r due, as fa r as county im provem ents go. C erta in ly th is feeling aro u n d th ese p a rts have been th a t B rookings H a rb o r has b ee r m ore o r less th e ’’step ch ild ” in the co u n ty fam ily, an d any change in the county a d m in istra tio n w ould be for th e b e tte r, com m unity wise. W hile it m ay be tru e th a t at tim es “silen ce is golden” , it does not n ecessarily follow th a t p er p etu al silence is a v irtu e . T h e redeem ing fe a tu re for the ta lk a tiv e ones is th a t th ey seldom can be ch a rg ed w ith hypocrisy or w ith cow ardice, for they a re con tin u a lly exposing th e ir th in k in g to th e c ritic a l ju d g m e n t of those w ith w hom th ey associate. On th e o th e r hand, silence on the issues of th e day m ay be bo rn e of fe a r of criticism o r form a d esire fo r p o p u larity .
