LETTERS TO THE EDITOR E ditor. T he P il o t : I have read w ith in te re st and som e re g ret the le tte r from Ted S teen b erg en re- g a r d ;ng o u r present .planning com m ission and its so-called dic ta to r. P erh a p s th e re a re m any w ho agreed w ith th e w rite r, w ith ou t a second th o u g h t o r due co n sid eratio n of th e reason for w ritin g such a le tte r. I w onder how m any of o u r ta x p a y e rs and citizen s have tak en th e tim e o r tro u b le to go to the city hall and see how m uch w ork, planning, d ra w in g and en g in eerin g have gone into th e planning for the city of Brookings. P lan s which w ere m ade and designed to benefit th e m ajo rity of those affected and not for a few “b eefers.” It is not child's play o r th e ta sk of a few hours. It is a trem en d o u s job and the ones responsible are to be con g ra tu la te d for a fine piece of w ork The w rite r of th a t le tte r, not being a ta x p a y e r o r in tere ste d in a decent or clean city, ev id en t ly d id n ’t tak e th e tim e or trouble to in v estig ate the process open to him to rezone any a re a w ithin th e city lim its. O r m aybe he didn't care, ju st w an ted to s ta r t calling nam es. W h at business did the w rite r w an t to go into o r w hat kind of house did he w ant to b u ild ? It is m y u n d ersta n d in g th at he w as refused perm ission to build as he w an ted to in o u r neighboring com m unity. W hy? T h ere a re ap p ro x im ately 20 acres zoned for heavy in d u stry, w re c k ing yards, etc., w ith in th e city lim its, but of course not right out on th e hiw av w h ere th e w rite r w a n te d it. So fa r we have a b ea u tifu l city an d th e p lan n in g com m ission has p lan n ed it so as to keep it th a t w ay. As a ta x p a y e r and hom e ow ner, I am glad m y p ro p e rty is in a p ro tected zone and hope it co n tin u es to be so.
