I he o th e r day, w hen g u ests a r rived, the p a ra k e e t flew o u t the door and perched on the porch rail. Doris spoke soothingly to the parakeet. The p a ra k e e t huddled down in th e rain, closed its eyes amt appeared to go to sleep. D oris reached slowly for it. The p ara- keet opened its eyes, chirped twice, and flew into th e top ot a th irty (D oris says it w as six ty ) foot spruce tree. Once arriv ed it cow ered on th e branch, looking dism ally at th e world. So Doris w ent a f te r it. She doesn’t fly very well, so she s t a r t ed up th e tree, limb by limb. Finally, she reached th e top. and calm ly clu tch ed th e p arak ee t, w ho had been lau ghing so hard he w as u n ab le to fly. Right about h ere she perfected a new technique, th e P helps m e th od of sliding down a spruce w ith a bird in th e hand.
