OREGON SETS RECORD IN FIRE CONTROL, TIMBER HARVESTS IN z53 SA LEM — (Special) — Low est forest fire dam age in n ea rly h alf a century, a billion d o llar log h arvest, d efeat of th e spruce bud- worm and developm ents in re search and legislation, m ade top forest new s in O regon d u rin g 1953. Long established forest records tum bled d u rin g the y e a r as m ajo r achievem ents took place in tim ber conservation. In forest protection, fire losses on th e 13 million acres of tim b er- lands p ro tected by the s ta te board of fo restry and its cooperating p riv ate p atro l associations w ere th e lowest since th e s ta te fo r e s te r’s office w as created in 1911. A total of 1,507 acres w as burned over, and w hen all rejx jrts are ta llitd , it m ay be a natio n al re c o rd for low fire dam age am ong the big tim b e r states. Only 792 fo rest fires occurred during the 1953 fire season. L ig h t ning s ta rte d 423 and 369 w ere m an-caused and could have been prevented. P ercentage-w ise, only 447 per cent of th e blazes w ere m an-caused, an o u tsta n d ng im provem ent over previous y ea rs and well below th e national a v e r age of n early 90 p er cent. Most favorable fire record v as m ade by th e 38,000 loggers who w orked in 12,000 logging o p e ra tions, and w ere charged w ith only 49 fires. O u tstan d in g p erform ance by loggers.
