Perhaps some o f you are old enough to rem em ber when diaper service firs t came in to existence. A s trik in g blow by radio advertisers was, “ M others no longer need to w o rk Just fo r the love o f i t . ” The people o f th is area dem onstrated Sunday th a t they are W illin g to w o rk because they choose to do so. There w-ere no cash aw ards to “ shoot a t" and few even as m uch as though t of w in n in g a prize ribbon w h ile d ilig e n tly w o rk in g tow ard m aking a m agnificent parade w hich gave pleasure to thousands. I t was repeated, " I f I had realized how m uch w o rk was Involved, I don’t th in k I ’d have s ta rte d ,” and “ N ever again.” T rue, there is a trem endous am ount o f w o rk involved in m a k in g a L ily Blossom T im e float, b u t believe me it is w o rth i t T e ll me, w hat is w o rth w h ile th a t doesn’t stand fo r a great e xp e n d itu re of energy and th o u g h t? To name a ll those people that gave of th e ir services th a t rnadt* the Seventh A nnual L ily Blossom T im e a success, w ould be im possible. M any perform ed duties th a t w’ere not noticed p a r tic u la rly nor com m ented upon, however, each served a place o f iinjx>rtance. For outstand ing service not only fo r th e ir in te r est shown in this event but also th a t w hich made the Azalea F e s tiv a l the usual success th a t it has alw ays been, the heads o f the A ll Year Events Association, the chairm en and those m em bers w o rk in g w ith them deserve special cre d it. I t was tr u ly a w o n d e rfu l parade. G overnor Patterson expressed his surprise to see such a d is p la y o f beauty and o rig in a lity fo r a c o m m u n ity o f th is size He was impressed and was fla tte re d by the w a rm welcom e extended. S peaking o f the people of this area he said. " I lik e you.” The Lions C lub members who w ere brave enough to select a big but w o rth w h ile job w ould be p a rtia lly repaid i f they could hear some of the m any com plim ents th a t have been flo a tin g about tow n in regards to the street signs. ACACIA LAUNDROMAT J There seems to lx? a fa ir possi b ility th a t the le g islation neces sary to settle the long-standing dispute between the D epartm ent of A g ric u ltu re Forest Service and the D epartm ent o f In te r io r B u reau of Land M anagem ent over the title to and ju ris d ic tio n over some 462,000 acres of tim b e r land in the Oregon and C a lifo rn ia re vested land g ra n t area w ill be passed before this session of Con gress is adjourned. B ills to accom plish this result have been introduced in both house and Senate. Senator C o r don introduced the Senate b ill and I put an id e n tica l b ill in the hop per in the House. Rock Hounds Plan Tri-County Show The re g u la r m eeting of the M i. E m ily Gem and M in e ra l C lub was held at the V.F.W . h a ll J u ly 16 w ith about 35 members present. An in v ita tio n to the Crescent C ity Del N o rte Rock Hound d s- play on Aug. 30 was extended to all. Members were asked to donate or loan a specimen to the club fo r an exh ib it at the Del N orte- C u rry -H u m b o ld t T ri-C o u n ty rock show at a date to be announced later. T w o new rock hounds, M r. and Mrs. Brazeau, w ere signed up. b rin g in g the m em bership to 70. TEEN-AGE NEWS The food sale held by the Teen- Age C lub last S aturday was tr u ly a success. Some donations were given at the sale to help the bu ild in g lu n d fo r the new club house. This, too, w ill help to pay fo r the sum m er fo rm a l dance th a t we w ill have la te r in the sum m er. We w ant to thank everyone w ho con trib u te d to the sale. I t w ill help us get organized. There w ill be a teen-age dance F riday, J u ly 24, at the V .F .W . h all at 8 o’clock in the evening. A d mission is 25 cents w ith a m em bership card o r 50 cents w ith o u t the card. Cold pop w ill be sold fo r five cents. A ll teen-agers are w e l ference C om m ittee of the tw o come. S im ila r le g isla tio n has been pending every session of Congress fo r the last several years. B ils have been fa vo ra b ly reported by both House and Senate c o m m it tees several tim es but violent op position, m ostly fro m the Forest Service, has prevented fin a l action by Congress. I t is h ig h ly im p o rta n t, not only to the land g ra n t counties o f O re gon but to the country* as a whole, th a t le g islation be passed to c la r i fy the s itu a tio n and end the dis pute. Since the argum ent began, money fro m the sale o f tim b e r on« the disputed lands has been held in a “ suspense” fund in the treas u ry pending a settlem ent o f the issue by Congress. T h is fund is now m ore than seven m illio n dol lars. I t should be released so th a t the U. S. T re a su ry w ill have its p o rtio n o f the money and the rem ainder d is trib u te d to the land g ra n t counties under the term s of the basic O & C act o f 1937. H e wish to show our appreciation for the many favors granted us during the occasion of the Open ing of CHUCK’S FLYING “A” ASSOCIATED SERVICE So fa r as I know there w ill be lit t le o r no opposition to the pending O & C b ills . In a fine s p irit o f give and take the tw o governm ent departm ents have co operated in w o rk in g out language that is reasonably sa tisfa cto ry to both It is also approved by th ’ counties. The subcom m ittee on P ublic Lands of th«' House C om m ittee on In te rio r and In s u la r A ffa irs has held hearings on my House b ill H R 5958. 1 believe action by the Senate C om m ittee m ay be taken soon. As this is w ritte n I can not say fo r sure how soon the House co m m itte e w ill m ake its decision However, sine«» the leg isla tio n as now d ra fte d arouses no opposition I th in k the Com m itte e w ill take a favorable view o f it.
