> In The Mail-hoy: Editor, The P ilot: To the Mayor of Brookings, O regon: Sir: I have been instructed by a com m ittee of Del N orte county. Calif., residents to send you this desperate appeal: We are in sad plight. The Gil bert creek detour is strew n with the wrecks of once proud cars suffering from broken axles, springs, b attered fenders, and afflicted with ra ttlin g bolts. The road is the w orst of any in Amer ica. You mended it once for us during the recent flood. W on’t you please come and mend it again? Will you m ake an appeal to your S ta te Highway D epartm ent to come tb California and repair the Gilbert creek bridge? You did a fine job in Oregon when miles of highway w ere washed out in the sam e flood. You had traffic rolling m errily along w ith in a few days. We. however, have no way of repairing th at bridge. It is a small job, but our Governor W arren is filled with dream s of W ashington and our state highway boss is busy plan ning super highways for Los An geles county. More than 370,000 tourists will be stalled at the state line this year unless Oregon comes to our aid. While you’re about it will you clean up the 1000 feet of g a r bage strew n along 101 a t our state portal ? Cans, bottles, ca r tons, paper, towels, handkerchiefs, and assorted w aste lines this stretch of road year a fte r year from the border to the quarantine station. It is our welcome to tourists, but we of Del N orte think it a disgrace and a hum ili ation. Please s ta rt your road work for us at the q u arantine station. Be careful as you pass out of the building . . . holes in the road will wreck your car if you’re not care ful. Help us, please. Help us . . . and God will rew ard you. Cali fornia w on’t. W hite of the W hite Appliance company, but don’t let the lam blike appearance of the Bedlington fool you as he is eager to a tta ck anything from a badger to a fox. He usually averages 16 inches in height and weighs approxim ately 25 pounds. He is truly a plucky little fellow and has an adventurous past. Back in 1782 the Bedlington roamed w ith the gypsies over the borders of England and is named from the town of Bedlington, N orthum berland, England, and as this was a mining town he was very val uable to the m iners in helping them keep m eat on the table. The gypsies of Europe still use them to bring in the rabbits. His love for a good fight made him eager as a contestant in the pop u lar sport of pit-fighting against o th er dogs and is still used in England for this sport.
