Those assets we had when I came here about five years ago, and those assets we have today. I have not been disillusioned. I did not expect EASY M O N E Y . N o tw ith s ta n d in g the debits m entioned by C .D .M ., and some others not specified, I believe B rookings is th e finest place in the U S A. in w hich to live. W hen I look at the restless ocean and then up at M t. E m ily , and then at the to w e rin g S itk a spruces, m y heart is at rest and I say “ T h a n k Got! it is good.” Come hell o r high taxes (excuse th a t slip, I m eant w a te r), I am here to stay. I wish everyone here fe lt as I do; but I rec ognize th a t a man connot be contented if he has financial w orries. I am not interested in pro m o tin g a BOOM to w n ; because I be lieve the B U S T is sure to follow . I am fo r S LO W and S T E A D Y . Ix»t those w ho w ant to get rich q u ic k go to Los Angeles o r M iam i o r some o th e r of the big cities w ith th e ir crim e and g ra ft and c u t-th ro a t co m p e titio n ; and let us keep B rookings the fine little to w n w here everyone is frie n d ly and one’s doors are not locket! and everyone can m ake a decent livin g . N ow fo r m y suggestions. C.D.M . says the selling price o f real e sta te is too high. He could very p ro p e rly say th a t real estate re n ta ls are too high also; ami th a t ftxxl prices are high. 1 agree th a t the selling price of real estate, and rentals, and food prices, are h igh; but thank goodness we have a free, co m p e titive econ om y in th is c o u n try based on the p ro fit m otive and you can h a rd ly ask a man to reduce his prices sim p ly Tor the benefit o f the c o m m u n ity . We re ly on the law of supply and demand to take c a re o f prices, and it is a tough la w but it w orks. As fo r foot! prices, how can we expect to have the same prices as the big c itie s w ith th e ir great qu a n titie s and low er tra n s p o rta tio n costs. W e b e tte r face facts; food and lodging in B rookings w ill alw ays be higher in Brookings than in the big cities. B ut rem em ber, Brookings* scenery, clim a te and ;teople m ore than off-set the hig h coat of living. N ever forget th a t. How ever, it is w e ll not to increase o u r bad points. So I suggest to the C ham ber of Com m erce, concentrate on a ttra c tin g re tire d people w ith as- sured Incomes and on com m ercial concerns w hich w ill provide a p a y ro ll. D IS C O U R A G E a d d itio n a l co m p e titio n fo r our present business man. rhere is only so m uch business here and the m ore com jM 'tition we have the m ore th a t fixed am ount o f bust- ness w ill lx» divided. The less gross business, the higher the u n it p ric e ; and vice versa. So let us discourage ad d itio n a l compe titio n and thus m ake it possible fo r the m erchants to m ake a liv in g and s till give the public lower u n it prices. Now a suggestion fo r o u r Tow n C ouncil. The financial prophets a ll say the c o u n try isf acing tough tim es; and I say to B ro o k in g s ; "B ro th e r, you a in 't seen n o thing y e t.” O ver o u r c o u n try as a whole 1952 was a boom year. H ow was it in Brookings? I f B rookings had a tough p u ll in *962, w hAt is it going to have w hen the c o u n try as a w hole is having a tough tim e ? I leave it to you. So 1 suggest to the T ow n C ouncil, keep taxes down. A low tax rate w ill help to offset some o f the high costs we can't reduce. Friends. I am in thorough accord w ith C .D .M : “Brookings is a w o n d e rfu l place in w hich to live, and w ill be Just th a t m uch b e tte r fo r every ounce of e ffo rt we each expend in its b e h a lf.” E R S K IN E R M IL L E R N O T E h R O M E D IT O R ; The P ilo t d e fin ite ly does w’elcome co n stru ctive suggestions fo r the b e tte rm e n t of B rookings T h is newspaper is m eant to be y o u r paper and any ideas th a t help our community w ill be published • Letter From !
