J ^ xvisioning a short w ater route to the fabulous w ealth of In dia and China. H enry Hudson set out on four voyages of explora tion in the early days of the 17th century and finally lost his life in an attem pt to find the legendary Northwest Passage. When his first two trips in quest of a route oxer the top of Europe w ere blocked by the polar cap. he turned to searching for a route through America. In 1609 he cruised along the coast of w hat is now the sta te of New York and anchored n e a r M anhattan Island at the m outh of the great river that now bears his name. He sailed his ship, the "H alf Moon." 150 miles up the river to the present site of Albany. Dis- Photo C ohittiy Et ant Prod*. tt Co. Sec M RS. A 4 car’s battery contains an average of 50 thin wooden wafers—separators / —that keep negative and positive plates from touching. j For many years in hundreds of millions of batteries, Douglas Fir * separators have been used with proved success. But, since only top uality clear wood can be used because separators have to be absolutely awless, a great deal of this prime Douglas Fir has been wasted be cause the best separator-quality wood is found only near the outer part of the 200- to 400-year-ofd trees. Even a tiny crack makes a separator worthless. Now, a new way has been found to utilize all the clear, straight- grained wood from a Douglas Fir log, and to produce separators of uniform quality for even less money. The new m aterial, called Evanite, is made from the same top-quality Douglas Fir from which conven tional separators are sliced. Tiny chips of wood are cooked, formed into a sheet of interwoven wood fibers, then dried and cut into sepa rators—all in a continuous operation. The new separators are per fectly uniform and better than natural wood. Thus through modern science and more efficient use of one of our natural resources has come a better product for less money D RALPH A.
