Higgins U.S.C.G. of Coos Bay station and A. F. Jensen B.O.S.N., U.S.C.G. commanding officer of the Ump qua river lifeboat station on Win chester Bay, Oregon are calling on civil organizations along the coast relative to organizing Coast Guard Auxiliary Units at Gold Beach and other towns. In cal ling at the Pilot office they of fered the information that Brook ings could affiliate itself with the Gold Beach Unit if it wished, or if ten facilities, boats, planes, life saving stations,, radio broadcast ing sets, etc., could be maintained by the local community, a safety station could be organized here. In case of emergency a phone call to the Coast Guard station <83101 Coos Bay, or Parker’s Anchorage, phone 2401) will bring immediate assistance from them and the Umpqua station. Chief B.O.S.N. lliggins spoke to the Rotary club recently on safety and equipment of motor boats and on organizing a Coast Guard Auxiliary in this area. Equipment requirements for pleasure and commercial fishing motor boats in accordance with the. Coast Guard laws: All boats of class “A”—0 feet to 16 feet in length: One CG ap proved lifejacket or buoyant cush ion for each person aboard. A combination light in the bow showing red to i>ort, green to star board. A white light aft showing all a- round the horizon. No lights necessary if not out at night. All boats of class 1—16 feet to 26 feet in length: Lights the Elders C. J. Ritchie and A. J. Reisig were guest speakers at the Seventh Day Adventist church last sabbath. Elder Ritchie is secretary of the Sabbath school department and of the temperance work in the Ore gon conference. His theme at the morning service was "Remem ber Jesus Christ", which was fol lowed by the communion service. Elder Reisig is secretary of the Missionary volunteer department of the Oregon conference. In the afternoon he addressed the young people, choosing for his text, ‘A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches’". He left the question with all, what does your name mean? He conducted the Investiture service when insignia were given to those taking pro gressive class work. George Adams, Sammy Glass and Arlene Newman were awarded Sunbeam same as class A.
