During this same period, we have added almost six million dollars in plant investment and equipment in service. You are now able to place tele phone calls to more people than ever before. We believe you will ” agree that your telephone service has been steadily improving since the end of W orld W a r I I . W e will continue our program of expansion and im p ro v e m e n t until we are bringing to all of our subscribers telephone service as fine as that available anywhere in the nation. But while your service has been improving, our expenses have been mounting. Today it re q u ire s a p la n t in v e s tm e n t of #300 per station for every new telephone we install. And, unlike most busi nesses, the m ore tele p h o n e s wc have in service, the more it costs to operate each one. O ur total expenses have increased at a much faster rate than our total income. O u r wage costs are o n e -a n d -a -h a lf m illio n dollars ^4 higher today than they would have been under the wage rates pre vailing in 1946. O u r plant invest ment has risen since 1946 from 67,833,061 to #15,365,661. O u r A nnual construction expenditures fo r p la n t e x p a n s io n h av e in creased from #650,000 in 1946 to over # 2 , 0 0 0 ,0 0 0 in 1 9 5 0 , over #3,000,000 in 1951; and wc a r e ’ planning a new e x p a n s io n pro- » gram w h ic h w ill t o ta l a b o u t #13,000,000. Consequently, in order that we may be able to obtain the capital necessary to finance our program of new construction, we find it ’ necessary to request increases in te le p h o n e rates (the first in creases since 19 4 6 ).
