Hanscam & Sons, nearly suffered a devastating fire Sun day morning, when a can of floor ‘ oil, put on the stove to heat, boiled over onto the hot stove: while no one was in the build | ing. It was only by heroic meas ures that the can was removed. Planning to oil the floors, the Pilot was told. Vernon went to the store to prepare for the work and decided to get a bite of breakfast. When he returned the flames were shooting to the ceil ing and the smoke was so thick that it was impossible to see more than a few feet. The can of burning oil was slid from the stove onto a scoop, and carried out. This week the entire crew is busy cleaning up the stock and fixtures, coated by a microscopic film of oil smoke, difficult to remove. The Carson - Moore Custom Planing Mill, between Pacific ami Easy Street, is now functioning at capacity. Employing from eight to ten men, will do custom planing. Means, new resident of this area, but who has had con siderable peace officer experience ni Arizona, has been sworn in as deputy county sheriff, and has been employed by many business men of the area as night police until such time when the city council will be named and func tioning as a unit. Curry County Fair Adds Attractions According to word from Ken neth C. Thompson, Langlois, the 1951 edition of Curry County Fair will be the most attractive ever, with addition of many new fea tures, according to an advertise ment elsewhere in this issue. Interest in the 4-H work over the county is expected to attract many more exhibits from the youth, who have been given best of leadership throug the new county agent, Cliff Jenkins and his assistant, Miss Dorothy New ton, HDA. This year, for the first time, ■’newspaper advertising to any extent will be used to ask people to come and enjoy the fair. Keep friends informed by giv ing them the Pilot weekly. Governor Spoke To Rotary School To Start Tues., Sept. 4th Wednesday, Sept. 12, has been set by the county court, as date of the forthcoming council election for Brook ings, according to word from Gold Beach Tuesday. It is pointed out that any who wish may filed a peti tion for position on the city council, and have his name on he ballot, if he will follow the prescribed procedure. While the committee which worked on the incorporation recommended a slate for the council, that action need not deter anyone from also being a councilman candidate. •What Makes Rotary Tick, was the topic of a talk by Chas. Cooley, ex-district governor, of Grants Pass, now international director of Rotary International, Tuesday noon at the Chetco Inn. Tuesday, Sept. 4, next day follow ing Labor Day, has been set for opening of Brookings schools, it was announced on Tuesday by Lynn Hampston, superintendent. Two shift will be conducted for the elemen tary grades at the beginning, although at the moment it is not felt necessary to con duct this practice in the high school. Until all are registered, on opening day, no attempt will be made to decide which of the students will come at the morning session and which at the afternoon session. All faculty members are engaged, pending housing, it was announced by Mr. Hamp ton. Tuesday. Home Building To Begin Immediately All Over 'Vicinity' The coming of about 300 more families to the Brookings vicinity within the next six months to a year has added impetus to the home building program of the area. One needs but glance in any direction to see a home un der construction, and perhaps at the very side of one of these an other foundation is in the process of completion. New subdivisions a b o u t the area are being opened to pros pective home owners, with these subdivision undergoing leveling and grading work. Four contractors of the vicin ity are going at top speed to try to keep abreast with demands for homes. Building material places of the area report unprecedented sales in lumber and materials to go into homes. Talk about town, especially by those who have sufficient land on which to build, is to either sell the lots or to build a place for rental. This source of home is still indefinite and cannot be de pended upon by any who seek a place to live. Ellsworth On Tour To Europe Now WASHINGTON, D. C — (Special to the Pilot)- Three times dur ing my time of service in Con gress I have made trips to Eu rope. Once, during the height of the European War in Sept. 1944, at my own expense, and twice la ter on official business, with the congressional committees, said Harris Ellsworth in a letter. "I feel that these trips have been of extreme value to me in my work as a representative in congress. Whether we like it or not, we are deeply concerned with the affairs of Europe. Congress is faced almost constantly, it seems to me, with decisions re garding our policies and our ac tivities there. I have learned a lot on the previous trips but I have always felt a bit dissatis fied.
