That is why supervisory and many regular employees arc- working long hours during this emergency, so that you may (-all a Doctor, Report a Fire, or Call the Police, to say nothing of the many other necessary uses you have for your telephone. We cannot help hut feel that the strike now in effect is the result of lack of understanding. The Wage Stabilization Board has ruled that no increase in wages, amounting to more than io per cent of those in effect in January, 1950, may be put into effect without their author ity. The cost of living, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics In dex. has increased 10.2 per cent over January 15, 1950. I he Increase in Wages We Have Offered will average 12.3 per cent over those in effect in January, 1950. (Anything over to per cent must lx- approved by the Wage Stabilization Board. Unauthorized payment of wage in creases in excess of this amount is subject to severe penalty). Under these circumstances and coupled with the fact that wages paid our employees compare favorably with those paid for similar jobs tn the Northwest, we believe our offer to be more than fair. What Do You, Who Ultimately Pay the Bill, I hinh? Every effort is king made to maitain your telephone service. Your forbearance is requested until normalcy is established. A note of en couragement to thqse fine people who are laboring to keep vital serv ice for your welfare will be appreciated.
