Thursday, March i. 1951 BROOK 1NGS-H ARBOR PILOT, BROOKINGS, OREGON Oregon Lilies Show Well In '51 Tests SALEM — Oregonians will be able to buy about 20.000 more Easter lilies from flourists this year than last and virtually all of them will be from American- grown bulbs. This is the word from the state department of agriculture, based on its recent survey of 44 I Oregon greenhouses forcing Eas ter lilies. Inspectors found 94,000 bulbs being forced in greenhouses now, with most of them Croft, Ace and Pride of Oregon bulbs, grown in the notrhwest. Only bulbs be ing forced here that were grown in Japan are 200 Arabu and 2,250 Gig lilies. Before world war 2, put the west coast in the busi ness of producing Easter lily bulbs Japan supplied most of the bulbs for this area. said Department inspectors that the surcey showed the forc ed plants to be exceptionally free of bunchy top and that only one plant in the 94,000 showed fleck virus. 'There was a small per- centage of “duds” the overall percentage of disease than one per cent. Scorch, a phy siological disease, was found to be very light this year. Push Clothing Drive Boys Scouts of America are sponsoring a nation-wide inter- national “Good Turn” as one of their projects for the year, with the local unit co-operating. 'The Good Turn consists of collecting needed articles of clothing and household linens which will be burled, boxed and sent to Europe. The clothing (men’s, women’s and children’s) must be clean and in good condition. Shoes must have at least six months wear and be fastened together, no high heels. Clean bedding and house hold linens are also needed. We expect this work to be completed within the next । two or three weeks." “In addition,” he added, “we are arranging to install four cir cuits for use between Crescent City and Coos Bay and four ad ditional circuits for use between Crescent City and Eureka.” The company’s technicians have recently replaced most of the “carrier” equipment between Crescent City, Brookings and to Smith River, with a superior type of appartus that affords considerably better transmission. “These changes and additions at our plant,’’ McBride added, “will result in great improve- ment. We. have been called upon to meet the challenge of a most astonishing growth in this area, “In January, 1946, there were 511 telephones in the area serv ed by Crescent City, Klamath, Orick and Smith River exchanges today there are 1185 telephones, an increase of over 130 per cent in five years. In the Marshfield district as a whole, which in cludes exchanges from Reedsport to Crescent City, during the same five-year period, we have increas ed the number of telephones we serve from 7048 to 12,161, an increase of over 72 percent.” Mrs. Dorothy Asdel and son of San Monica, formerly of Port Orford, were brief callers in this area Tuesday.
