Oregon Lilies Show
Well In '51 Tests
SALEM — Oregonians will be
able to buy about 20.000 more
Easter lilies from flourists this
year than last and virtually all
of them will be from American-
grown bulbs.
This is the word from the
state department of agriculture,
based on its recent survey of 44 I
Oregon greenhouses forcing Eas
ter lilies.
Inspectors found 94,000 bulbs
being forced in greenhouses now,
with most of them Croft, Ace
and Pride of Oregon bulbs, grown
in the notrhwest. Only bulbs be
ing forced here that were grown
in Japan are 200 Arabu and 2,250
Gig lilies. Before world war 2,
put the west coast in the busi
ness of producing Easter lily
bulbs Japan supplied most of the
bulbs for this area.
said
Department
inspectors
that the surcey showed the forc
ed plants to be exceptionally free
of bunchy top and that only one
plant in the 94,000 showed fleck
virus. 'There was a small per-
centage of “duds” the overall
percentage of disease
than one per cent. Scorch, a phy
siological disease, was found to
be very light this year.
About 90 per cent of the bulbs
will be for sale at Easter; the
other ten per sent will he either
too early or too late for the
Easter trade.

DAVIDSON'S
COOS BAY—West Coast Tele
phone Company is in course of
installing two new switchboard
position in the Crescent ( ity ex
change, according to George Mc
Bride, district manager for the
company.
“This means a substantial ad
dition to our facilities for hand
ling the rapidly growing tele
phone traffic in this area." he re
ported, “This installation will give
us a total of five switchboard
positions. We expect this work
to be completed within the next ।
two or three weeks."
“In addition,” he added, “we
are arranging to install four cir
cuits for use between Crescent
City and Coos Bay and four ad
ditional circuits for use between
Crescent City and Eureka.”
The company’s technicians have
recently replaced most of the
“carrier” equipment between
Crescent City, Brookings and to
Smith River, with a superior
type of appartus that affords
considerably better transmission.
“These changes and additions
at our plant,’’ McBride added,
“will result in great improve-
ment. We. have been called upon
to meet the challenge of a most
astonishing growth in this area,
“In January, 1946, there were
511 telephones in the area serv
ed by Crescent City, Klamath,
Orick and Smith River exchanges
today there are 1185 telephones,
an increase of over 130 per cent
in five years. In the Marshfield
district as a whole, which in
cludes exchanges from Reedsport
to Crescent City, during the same
five-year period, we have increas
ed the number of telephones we
serve from 7048 to 12,161, an
increase of over 72 percent.”
Mrs. Dorothy Asdel and son
of San Monica, formerly of Port
Orford, were brief callers in this
area Tuesday. The Asdels, who
started Oregon Coast Berrv Co.,
are now at work for Lockheed
