THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 1950 Local Radio Fans Resent Judging Of Recent "Contest” Popularity of Radio Station KIEM, Eureka, dropped from the pedestal two weeks ago folowing the disputed judging of the pro gram: “Stars of 1960,” in which Patsy Cook, local sophomore, competed and was believed to have been the best contestant by all who understand music, sing ing and judging. She placed in fourth place in the semi-finals, and was adjudged second to a four-year-old Eureka girl in the finals. Singing 1 Patsy was During the judging in the semi final^ Dave Hildebrand, one of KIEM’s popular announcers, and a favorite of the juvenile listen ers, quit his job in disgust, tell ing people he could not treat any child in the manner he had wntnesed. Patsy, who won first in Dec. 1949 contest of “Stars of 1960, ’ was supposed to have received a radio as prize. To date she has never been given the prize. Her mother, living not far from Eu reka, has made regular inquiries but has always been brushed off with the remark: “The stock has not arrived.” The prize dangled in front of the contestants in the recent elim ination was the promise of sing ing on the Breakfast Gang and Mel Venter, Aug. 5. Since Dave Hildebrand left *he broadcasting of childrens stor- ies and programs, the popularity among the young fry. Dave was usually reading greetings to a dozen or more youngsters almost every evenirtg, the past week three has been the average. Local people who heard the recent contest. say that Patsy Cook is far superior to what she was last December, had come out with a rich and distinctively operatic voice. Now* 14, she is under guidance of Mrs. Norine Harvey, accredited teacher nf piano, voice and pipe-organ. LOCAL NEWS Woody Walsted. formerly of Florence, has signed with the Veterans administration to take on-the-job training with the Pi lot, and with the Typo-Print at Gold Beach. Sam Dotson and son, Sammy, made a trip to Ashland last Fri day to bring his wife and Mrs. Gladys Payne home after they completed the eight weeks sum mer school session at Southern Oregon College of Education. Mrs. Vivian Hudson left for southern California last week af ter visiting for a month at the home of her brother-in-law* and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Tol man. She stopped at Santa Rosa to visit on her way home. Jack Kinney is employed up the Chetco River by Dick Grif fith to make repairs on the lodge —on the former Helen Richards place near the upper Chetco bridge. Mrs. Kinney is enjoying a visit in the same area at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sy Payne. Mr< *and Mrs. John Ginther and children returned home on Saturday from Corvallis where they have been while Mr. Gin ther attended summer school at Oregon State College. Rotary Visitors Tuesday in cluded Arnold Vogel of Sacra- mento, Calif., Geo. Milford and Dr. Doane of Red BlufT, and Mr. Morgan of Gold Beach. Mrs. Pernot DufT returned last week from a ten-day visit at Corvallis with her sister. She re ports that she got in a great deal of painting while gone, and es pecially appreciative of Crater Lake, which she visited for the first time.
