from the m idst of the

r<wcr have I seen such de-

Germany. The p e o p l e

ly of them ' appeared to
have revolting skin diseases.
Their legs, arms and necks
are covered with a rash. In
some cases this rash has bro
ken out on their faces tn
sores.
“I have personally seen indi-
viduals whose tongues and lips
w ere swollen and parched, whose
eyes were sunken in their sock-
ets, and whose bodies were such
shrunken skeletons,
“In several cities of Ger-
m any I saw how the starving
went out to eat weeds and
gather grass, for they had
not enough food to eat; tiny,
shrunken children, three and
four years old, so gaunt, and
gray th a t they seemed like
little old men and women.
“On m y last visit to Hamburg
a representative of the Public
Health Department took me out
to visit some of the homes of the
people. They had gathered vari
ous things from the garbage cans
and dumps and were trying to
fry their food in candle wax. In
other homes we saw how they
were using varnish to cook their
food.”
