June 21, 2018 • eugeneweekly.com The Eugene Public Library is celebrating World Refugee Day in the best way possible: by educating the public what the U.N. High Com- missioner for Refugees has called the “biggest humanitarian emergency of our era.” Author Tod Schneider will provide an overview of the refugee crisis from the perspective of a family forced to leave their Syrian homeland in search of a safe environment. However, they get stuck in Greece since European countries have started closing their doors to refugees. Syrian refugees have been displaced because of ongoing military con- flict between Assad and ISSI. Continued bombing from Turkish, Russian, and the U.S. militaries have only worsened the refugee crisis. Schnei- der is a writer, researcher and advocate. He was a founding partner in the Inter-professional studio for Complexity Thinking and has traveled to Greece in partnership with Lifting Hands International. “Refugee Purgatory: Escaping From Syria, Languishing in Greece,” presented in partnership with World Refugee Coalition of Lane County, starts at 4 pm Saturday, June 23, at the downtown library.
