Mardi Gras starts Feb. 13, but for those of us who can’t make it to New Orleans, you can party a little sooner and raise money for women’s health and safety at the same time. This year’s Eugene Mardi Gras Dance Party is the second manifestation of the event and one of the produc- ers, Shea Baker, tells EW that at “the end of 2016, myself and the other two co-producers Andrea Olsen and Merrill Moore, decided to join forces in an effort to focus on raising awareness and funding for women’s health and safety through music based events.” Looking for a theme that “would be fun, unique and would inspire a diverse range of music,” Baker says, “Mardi Gras came to mind.” The Feb. 9 event at Hi-Fi will fill the venue’s lounge and hall from 7:30 pm until the wee hours of the morning (aka 3 am). “Dancing will be inevitable,” the organizers say, “and cos- tumes reflecting the Mardi Gras theme are encouraged.” Acts include Portland DJ Mr. Moo and his guests including Samba Ja and Pretty Lights alumni drummer Evan Animal. Also on the bill is The Family Funktion’s Tribute to the Me- ters — a rotating collective of musicians. And finally local longtime favorites Eleven Eyes with their “heavy focus on groove and dance music.” The lounge will host DJ Manoj, DJ Andrew Mataus, DJ Casual Cowboy and DJ Kelynn Neilson. Get your costumes ready. Eugene Mardi Gras Dance Party: A benefit supporting local non-profits focused on the health and safety of women starts 7:30 pm Friday, Feb. 9, at Hi-Fi Music Hall and Lounge, 44 E 7th Avenue. $15 adv., $18 at show. 21+ — Camilla Mortensen What If?
