Offering small plates, cheeses, charcuterie, hot dishes and desserts, and a wide selction of wines. Available for pri- vate events. Fri& Sat. 6 - 10 pm. Major cards accepted. $ The Spice of India restaurant in Cottage Grove is an unexpected place to experience Indian food not on typical menus. The owner, Kajal Sidhu, who has owned the restaurant for two years, is from Punjab, an Indian state in the far northwest of the country bordered by Pakistan to the west and the state of Jammu and Kashmir (one state that is commonly called J&K) to the north. Her menu features traditional Punjabi dishes like tandoori chicken, lamb and goat. While many Indian restaurants serve tandoori items, Punjab is where the cooking style originated. Punjab is rich in dairy products, so many of the Punjabi dishes contain cheese and cream. “People at our restaurant like our Punjabi style goat curry,” Sidhu says. That dish features goat simmered with grated apple, raisins and almonds in a creamy sauce. Diners can also try lamb in the same mildly spicy, sweet and savory, creamy, rich sauce. “They also like saag with maki di roti,” she says. At Spice of India, a puree of spinach (saag) and mustard greens is served with roti, a flat, unleavened bread made, in this instance, of corn flour. Maki is a Punjabi word for corn. Sidhu suggests finishing your meal with a cup of Punjabi chai. “Our Indian-style tea is really popular here,” she says. “It’s made with cardamom, fennel seeds, Darjeeling tea and milk.” — Vanessa Salvia PIG & TURNIP 418 A St. Box 16, Spfd. 968-2403. pigandturnip.com A fast-casual cafe serving traditionally inspired German/Pacific Northwest cuisine, committed to being allergen-free & to serving locally sourced products.
