In the year 2000, the United Nations resolved to celebrate World Refugee Day each year, an event devoted to celebrating, understanding and supporting refugees in our community and the world. Here in Eugene, the event is co-sponsored by the Refugee Resettlement Coalition of Lane County (RRCLC) and the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene, where it will be hosted. RRCLC has resettled five refugees in the area since its inception last year. The event will feature international food carts; live music from Kudana, a local Marimba band; and Mayor Lucy Vinis reading a proclamation in support of World Refugee Day from the city. The University of Oregon’s chapter of No Lost Generation will give tours of a refugee tent to show- case the conditions that millions of refugees live in each day. Harley Emery, the co-founder of UO No Lost Generation, says, “Although most of us will never be able to understand what life is like as a refugee, we hope that this tent will give people a better idea of the conditions that millions of people live in.” There will be plenty of information tables, hands-on activities for adults and children and a Q&A panel discussion at the event. World Refugee Day is 5 to 8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 20, from at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1685 W. 13th Ave. FREE. — Kelly Kenoyer @chillysgarden beads fro ld Trivia w/Ty Connor, 7pm, Beer- garden, 777 W. 6th Ave. FREE.
