CALENDAR Oregon boasts some elderly trees: the Doerner Fir in Coos County, one of the largest coast Douglas fi r trees in the world, and the well-named Big Tree in Oregon Caves National Monument, which is estimated between 1,200 and 1,500 years old. To fi nd the really old trees, you’ll have to go south and observe the bristlecone pines, some of which hit the 5,000-year range. On Jan. 16, Native Plant Society member Charlene Simpson will give a talk on “Living History: The Bristlecone Pines” and show pictures from her trip just north of Death Valley, where a thriving bristlecone pine forest grows.
