what's happening In 1926, an exhibition basketball team known the Savoy Big Five combined aspects of theatre, comedy and athleticism in a never-before-seen amalgamation of entertainment. Eighty-fi ve years later, with more than 20,000 games to their credit, the Harlem Globetrotters have created more than a brand name — they have created a legacy. Going to a Globetrotters game is a uniquely American experience that inspires awe and evokes laughter. It’s as if you have become privy to the most incredible pick-up game of basketball ever played in the history of the human race — complete with jive talking, showboating and raw comedy, like you are cage-side in New York, watching boss ballers cut loose on the West 4th Street Court. For those in need of a more “pop culture” reference, think NBA Jam in real life, with the irreverence of your favorite stand-up comedian (but kid-friendly). Slam-dunking, fi nger-spinning, alley-ooping super-athleticism is what you can expect to witness this weekend at the Matthew Knight Arena when the Globetrotters introduce their rookie class — new players, including Jonte “Too Tall” Hall, at 5 feet 2 inches the shortest Globetrotter ever, and Fatima “TNT” Maddox, the team’s fi rst female in more than 19 years, will take the court by storm. There is a reason they are known as the “World Famous Harlem Globetrotters,” go fi nd out why. You will not be disappointed. Kids encouraged. The Harlem Globetrotters play 7pm Friday, Feb. 24, at Matthew Knight Arena; $17 & up. 23 thurs Oregon WAND: reintegrating troops into civilian life w/Jim Schmidt, 6:45-8:15pm, First United Methodist Church, 1376 Olive St., www.wandoregon.org FREE.
