In 1926, an exhibition basketball team known the
Savoy Big Five combined aspects of theatre, comedy
and athleticism in a never-before-seen amalgamation
of entertainment. Eighty-fi ve years later, with more
than 20,000 games to their credit, the Harlem
Globetrotters have created more than a brand name
— they have created a legacy.
Going to a Globetrotters game is a uniquely
American experience that inspires awe and evokes
laughter. It’s as if you have become privy to the most
incredible pick-up game of basketball ever played in
the history of the human race — complete with jive
talking, showboating and raw comedy, like you are
cage-side in New York, watching boss ballers cut loose
on the West 4th Street Court. For those in need of a
more “pop culture” reference, think NBA Jam in real
life, with the irreverence of your favorite stand-up
comedian (but kid-friendly).
Slam-dunking, fi nger-spinning, alley-ooping
super-athleticism is what you can expect to witness
this weekend at the Matthew Knight Arena when
the Globetrotters introduce their rookie class — new
players, including Jonte “Too Tall” Hall, at 5 feet 2
inches the shortest Globetrotter ever, and Fatima
“TNT” Maddox, the team’s fi rst female in more than 19
years, will take the court by storm.
