Yoncalla Beautification knows that it took many hours of preparation, planning and organizing to make our parade, rodeo, games, entertainment, food and fireworks to all come together so successfully. We also want to thank all the businesses for joining in the spirit of the day and decorating their businesses so patriotically. We shared this day (s) with hundreds of spectators from around Oregon and beyond. You showed what Yoncalla volunteers are capable of achieving. Yoncalla Beautification wants to thank all of you who worked so hard to make the Yoncalla Fourth of July such a phenomenal success. Even over their summer break, members of the Yoncalla High School staff took time to attend the annual AVID Summer Institute. AVID’s (Advancement Via Individual Determination) mission statement fits closely to the Yoncalla School District Priorities in that AVID’s mission states that they will “close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.” (htps://www.avid.com) In an effort to transform the learning experiences in grades 7-12, YHS brought in the AVID program in and have reaped the rewards that this program has to offer. The goal was to take a good teaching staff and give them the tools to empower their students to engage in academic conversations through reading, writing, and improved thinking skills. While attending the AVID Summer Institute, staff were provided the resources and strategies needed to promote student literacy skills so they are prepared for going on to college or entering the work force. While the District remains committed to taking a strategic approach to closing the opportunity and achievement gaps for all students, the AVID program continues to provide a solid base for the staff to expand on their already strong skills in leading our youth forward. What the world needs most are students who are able to analyze problems, recognize the power of individuals, think analytically, and be able to put these traits together to form their own dreams about the future. By participating in the AVID program, YHS staff are strategically placed to help students meet their goals for the future and beyond. Upper Elementary staff at Yoncalla Elementary (grades 3-6) are also attending an AVID Summer Institute in the coming days. AVID Elementary focuses on closing the opportunity gap before it begins by teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age. Elementary students develop academic habits they will need to be successful in middle and high school such as learning about organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy.
