POST 3 Daugherty to study language in Germany by TAM I CI88NA Paige Daugherty is a “ jack of all talents.“ U she had only her suc cessful accomplishments in track and field to wreath her with regard, that would be enough But she has a strong voice as well as a strong arm Many recognize the 1983 Sandy Union High School graduate as a dynam ic shot p utter. She p a r ticipated in the state competition all of her four years in high school, plac ing second her Junior year and first as a senior. She was offered an athletic scholarship to Yale U niversi ty- Not as many are aware, however, that as a vocalist she is a powerhouse as well. She competed in classical singing at the state level She has sung the national anthem at a televis ed T ra il Blazer game, and upon com pletion of high school received seven vocal scholarships along w ith her athletic scholarship. The energetic Wemme native is ad m irably modest " I 'm lucky to be given talents, but I hardly feel I ’m above other people because there’s a lot of things I have to learn That’s going to keep me busy for many years." She appears to feel good about her life. " I ’m usually pretty confident,” she agreed “ I like to know where I'm headed I'm constantly looking at myself to see if I ’m stagnant or going in the right place ” Daugherty, who is majoring in German and music, is a junior at Lewis and Clark College At one time, she wanted to attend Yale, but with the help oi her parents decided to go to Lewis and Clark. “ They knew me better than I knew m yself," she said. " I looked at myself a little bit and decided they were right ” She decided to go to a smaller col lege so she could concentrate more on academics than athletics. She feels Lewis and Clark has been the best choice for her by allowing her diversity in her activities Having a double m ajor has made things hard for her at times She usually has to juggle between the two. “ You can never devote a lot of tim e to just o le.” But the bright side is, “ You don't get burned out on one " I ’ ve been overloaded every te rm ," she said. The few Cs that slip in o c c a s io n a lly " a r e n ’ t v e ry exciting,” but are inevitable with a double major and track to keep her busy. On September 15, she w ill be boar ding a plane headed for Munich, West Germany. There, she plans to con centrate on German studies at Munich University Though most of her time w ill be devoted to German, she does plan to study voice as well. And, perhaps, she w ill audition “ for some some small role” in an opera if time allows. Daugherty w ill be living three miles from the Munich stadium where she hopes to join a track club There are no college team sports " I ’d love to get coaching there," she said. She is excited about the coming year — and a little nervous "Ob viously it w ill be rough at firs t.” The degree of her involvement in singing classical music w ill be deter mined after she gets th re. “ I want to see what I have to become, or what I ’m up against." Chances of being employed in opera are greater in Germany than such places as Portland, she said Our operas are supported through donations, and big names are what draw in the most financial support. Opera companies in Germany are independently run through a comm it tee system with guaranteed funding from the state “ There’s a big d if ference between them and us," she said. Daugherty has been in two local operas. The first was "Am ahl and the Night Visitors,” in which she had a part in the chorus The second was “ Hansel and Gretel.” She had the leading role of Hansel, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Iva Lindsey, a woman who ap proached Daugherty out of the au dience after a state competition and offered to help with her training, en couraged her to audition for these two operas. “ I owe a lot to her," Daugherty said. But whether or not a vocalist is good or not is fa irly subjective. "Singing is funny because some judges like you and some don't. It's all opinions ’’ That is why she feels it w ill be good for her to get a new teacher. “ I need that kind of a thing to grow and get better." She is not sure of which route, bet ween German and music, she w ill take a fte r she finishes college "Whichever route I take w ill comple ment (the i other," she said. Music is such a part of the German culture that she is confident the subjects w ill go hand-in-hand One of her interests is teaching So far, Daugherty is satisfied with the bent of her life. “ I only wish I had more tim e,” she reflected. "M y one big wish is tim e ” ions troupe regroup for melodramas The newly-formed Mountain Lion ’ layers theater group w ill present its ¡first production four times in August at the Lions Club pavillion on lighw ay 26 in Wemme. "S he Was Only a F a rm e r’s iu g h te r" and "Curse You, Jack ) a lt o n , " a p a ir o f o n e -a ct ¡melodramas, w ill open with a fam ily night Friday, Aug 2, and an adults- lonly cabaret show on Saturday, Aug 3. A ll tickets for the Friday show are $1.50 at the door, with children under 12 admitted free Cabaret perfomances on Aug 3 and Aug. 10 cost $4 per person. $3 for seniors. On Aug 17, the players w ill close out the production with a dinner theater Dinner w ill begin at 6 p m. and "F a rm e r’s Daughter" starts at John Lewis ** A memorial service is set for 2 p m ’’Thursday at C arroll Funeral Home for John Simeon Lewis, a longtime East County resident y He died unexpectedly near his 'home on Saturday. He was 58 15 Mr. Lewis was born Jan 24,1927, in Aberdeen, Wash., to Ira and Mary 11 (Bickford) Lewis. As a child he mov ed with his parents to East County He attended Damascus schools and upon graduation, entered the U S A r my, serving in the Pacific theater 'during World War II After returning ’’ from m ilita ry service he worked as a carpenter and pile driver. M r Lewis enjoyed hunting, fishing !1 and all sports * He is survived by: his mother, Mary Lewis of Boring, a son, John Lewis of Portland; four daughters, Patsy Carlson of Gresham, Debra R iffe and M ary Lewis both of Portland and Sandra Brown of North Carolina Other survivors include: his sister, Iva Wentz of Boring, three brothers, Ira Lewis of Sweet Home and Owen Lewis and Charles Lewis both of Boring, and three grand children Burial w ill be private at Forest I^awn Memorial Park in Gresham 7:30 p m After a short intermission, “ Jack Dalton” w ill be presented. The old-fashioned m elodram a theater form features beautiful heroines, conniving villa ins and stout-hearted heroes The audience is urged to attend with a hearty voice for booing, hissing and cheering the characters deserving of such treat ment. The current troupe was assembled earlier this year to fill a void left by the disbanding of the original Moun tain Players in 1983 The Mountain Players had entertained in the Hoodland corridor area since 1968 and held most of its plays in the Lions hall. When the players ended their stint, all funds and materials were turned over to the Lions Club. Mrs Feldman was born Dixie Mae Wyant on May 13, 1924 in High Bridge, Ky. Her early years and schooling were in Kentucky. When she was a teen-ager, she moved west, a rrivin g in the Portland area in 1940 On Feb 19, 1944, she married Ed mund Feldman in Vancouver, Wash They moved to Boring in 1978 M rs. F e ld m a n attended the Methodist Church. She was active in bow ling and g olf, and enjoyed reading and baking Survivors include: her husband, Edmund Feldman of Boring; a daughter, Victoria Mijares of Cor bett, and four grandchildren Mrs Feldman was the last of her clan Private cremation w ill follow the service Alvi Myers Funeral services for Alvi Myers, a 93-year-old Gresham resident, were Monday, July 29 at the Powell Valley Covenant Church. Vault interment followed at Forest la w n Memorial Park in Gresham M r Myers was born Nov. 27, 1981 This spring, a committee of club members, including M ilt Fox, Fred Thornberg, Hank Dalpez and Bob Pierce, held meetings to coordinate auditions and production schedules. Proceeds from the performances w ill be split between Lions Club causes and the Mountain Players — to assist with future productions. "She Was Only a F a rm e r's Daughter" and “ Curse You, Jack Dalton," made available by special arrangement with Samuel French, were performed by the original players and enjoyed great success While the Mountain Players featured a wide variety of shows in their 15-year history, the melodrama has stood out as a popular summer in Steele City, Neb His parents were G O. and Adella Myers During his youth, he lived on a farm in Kansas After completing his education in Kansas, he attended an automotive and business school in Oakland. Calif. On June 3, 1917 M r Myers was married to Emma Thoren at Stottler, Kan. After farm ing in Kansas, they moved to California for a few years Later they settled in Oregon. They have lived in the Gresham area since 1939 During World War II, Mr. Myers began working with the Aluminum Company of American He worked within the aluminum industry until his re tire m e n t fro m Reynolds Aluminum in 1962 Mr Myers has been an active member of the Powell Valley Cove nant Church in Gresham since November of 1944 Mrs. Myers preceeded him in death on July 18, 1968 M r Myers was the father of Al Myers of Gresham and the brother of Matie Caster of Nanpa.
