sat at his desk, n o is ily s h u fflin g papers.
H e lo o k e d u p and his beady, little eyes
b e h in d the w ire -fra m e d glasses bore
in to Joe and made h im sweat. G rim s le y
sh ifte d his pudginess in the cre a ky ch a ir
and set his glasses on the desk. T h e n he
stared F vervo ne knew th a t i f a n y th in g
c o u ld give the d e vil fro s tb ite , it was
G rim s le y ’s stare.
Joe shivered and m e n ta lly slapped
h im s e lf fo r d o in g so.
“ I assume yo u are here to converse
a b o u t y o u r grade, M r. Beckley.” T he
th ic k E n glish accent was veiled w ith the
o d o r o f p astram i. Joe nodded.
“ 1 also assume th a t y o u feel you
deserve a h ig he r m a rk th a n you
received."
D a rn sure, Joe th o u g h t. He nodded
again.
“ M a y I see y o u r re p o rt c a rd , please?"
Joe hesitated, th en w ith d re w the
c ru m p le d paper fro m his pocket. He
h u rrie d ly straightened it and handed it
to the w a itin g hand.
“ A n d ju s t w h a t d o yo u feel is w ro n g
w ith th is grade, M r. Beckley?”
Joe sum m oned up a ll o f his courage.
“ M y percentage was in the C range, and
I ’m a tte n tive in class."
“ Q u ite so. W e ll, th a t sounds lik e a
w o rth w h ile e x p la n a tio n ."
Jo e ’s eyes a lm o s t popped o u t as M r.
G rim s le y reached in to his desk fo r a
new c o p y o f J o e ’s re p o rt ca rd , w h ic h he
handed to Joe. It was id e n tic a l to the
o rig in a l re p o rt ca rd , except it read:

S ile n tly , Joe stared at it. then picked
it up and c a re fu lly placed it in his
pocket. He tu rn ed and w alked to w a rd
the d o o r. “ M r. G rim sle y, w h y was it so
easy?"
“ I w anted to k n o w i f yo u cared
enough to c o m p la in i f yo u were graded
u n fa irly . It seems th a t so m any d o n 't."
Joe tu rn e d to face M r. G rim sle y and
sm iled. “ O h , and, M r. G rim sle y,
th a n k s ."
“ N o p ro b le m ."
Joe w alke d o u t the d o o r, shut it and
sm iled. He stood fo r a w h ile , b ut his
sm ile disappeared as he rem em bered
M ik e . He to re o ff d o w n the hall to get
M ik e ’s s p irits , and m aybe his grade, up.
