Thur» Now 18 1982 (S»t I) In metals shop, practical approach is best by SCOTT NEWTON Building practical pro jects has been the focus of several Sandy I n ion High School students this school year P r o je c ts m ade fo r “ friends" of the vocational education department in clude a tilt bed tra ile r for a garden tractor, a combina tion boat utility trailer and a custom made bumper The tilt bed tra ile r was built from scratch, with the students drawing up their own plans It has stake racks on the side, and a metal bottom that allows m aterial to slide out “very easily" when tilted While the "stout, com mercial ones" might have a maximum capacity of 200 to 300 pounds, this trailer could carry up to 1,000 pounds, according to Lynn Sondenaa, metals instruc tor. Senior B ria n Rom ey oversaw the project, with assistance from ju n io r Todd Kennedy The combination boat- utility tra ile r was rebuilt Students started out with a fram e, tongue and axle They build a new tongue and axle, and re-enforced the fram e The trailer can be used to pull a boat, or else stakes can be put on the side for hauling wood, among other uses Senior Paige Chambers was "kind of the foreman.“ supervising and welding S o p h o m o re Shaun Jackson did the electrical wiring Sophomore Troy Bachmann did the rollers, m a k in g th e b e a rin g s , among other things Sophomore Jam ie Rig gen did most of the work that required a cutting torch Sophomore M ark Zim merman did a lot of the welding Freshman Clinton Cody did the grinding, cleaning and painting Junior Floyd Wheeler as siste d C h a m b e rs in supervising the project, and did the measuring and o th e r q u a lit y c o n tro l chores Senior Chuck Woster was fo rem an , d esig ner and c h ie f w e ld e r on the bumper Sophomore Jeff Hilliard did some of the welding and most of the grinding Sondenaa said work on the projects was handled in a method "sim ilar to in dustry ” The students did cost and strength calculations, cut and assembled new parts, and did vertical, overhead and flat welds “ If the welds weren I of quality, they ground and redid th e m ,” Sondenaa said. “ Must of the kids, when they came in, knew very little about metal working They've gained quite a few skills in nine weeks.” The proceeds from the projects will go toward materials or new equip ment for the metal shop area Sondenaa said he doesn't feel they are competing against businesses in the area as the most “quality" trailers they could produce in a year would be four, w hiles business might pro duce four a week P ractical projects, he feels, keeps the interest high in the program He Sondenaa said that now instead of students telling a prospective ernployeer that said they take more pride in a project when they have “ a vested interest in it." he can w e ld , he can describe the projects he s worked on Sondenaa said skills re q u ire d in c lu d e d a k n o w le d g e of m a th , engineering, m achining, cutting, welding, painting and electrical work Sondenaa s.-id ne would like to get away from the image of “ m etals” being a place where some “ clutz works with a piece of m e tal.” Said Sondenaa, “These a re h ighly sk illed , in t e llig e n t yo u ng m en Hopefully by their senior years they w ill have a good background and a salable s k ill.” He added, "K ids get bored in a welding booth This goes back to the philosophy of learning by doing.“ Brain Romey EXPERT APPLIANCE SERVICE & PARTS 'ZMidaqA one fane!
