Romey 15 th at AAA state meet SUHS junior Sam Romey, a two- time district cross country cham pion. finished 15th at the AAA state cross country meet Saturday in Eugene Senior Brian Reick finished 68th He ran the course at Lane Com munity College in 17 09 There were 143 runners competing In addition, Reick finished ahead of two runners that beat him last week at the district cross country championships, where he placed sixth with a time of 16:29. a per sonal record Romey ran the 5000 meters in 16:10.7 Saturday, also missing a personal record. According to Coach Scott M cM u llen , there weren't many personal records because of the weather. He reports it was “ very cold," foggy and windy. Reick and Romey were lined up in an inside position, and the run ners on the inside were kind of box ed in, according to McMullen "That's not an excuse,” he said. Brian Reick but added that the front runners may have had a 40-yard advantage by the time Romey got into the open. Romey turned in a 5:03 first mile. “ Not bad,” said McMullen, considering there was one uphill corner in the first m ile where he had to do an “almost shuffle-step jog" while waiting to make the turn. Rom ey an d C e n te n n ia l sophomore Rob Collins ran to photo finishes in a Pioneer-Eagle dual and at the district meet, but Collins was 28th Saturday, running the course in 16:31.2. Romey was 28th in state as a sophomore. Tom Sera of Beaverton, who defeated Romey going away at the first of the season, finished three seconds ahead of him at the state meet McMullen said Romey didn't know Sera was immediately in front of him when he finished It wasn't until he looked at the final results that he discovered he possibly could have avenged the e a r l i e r loss, a c c o rd in g to McMullen Rob Durkee of Putnam won the AAA crown with a time of 15:31.4. “ Both ran w ell,” said McMullen of Sandy's two entrants He added that it was a “ fun” trip. Those who work the hardest and put in the weekend miles are the ones who m ake it to state, McMullen said Romey has been known to run several miles to or from school, in addition to prac tice. Reick had put in over 534 con secutive days of getting a run in before the state meet He ran 2,200 miles in 1981. and expects to log 2,700 by the end of this year McMullen said he always has had "total trust” when it came to Romey and Reick. While there are other “novice” runners he had to prod, and watch to keep from cut ting corners, he said he never wor ried about the team's top two run ners. "That's a good feeling,” he said McMullen said Reick was one of the hardest workers on the team at the end of the season “ He's got a taste for speed now, where before it was mainly distance ' ’ Reick told The Post he would like to break the school 3000-meter record next spr ing in track. Sunset won the AAA boys title with 96 points. To be competive with Sunset one would need “ five Sam Romey3,” McMullen said He once made the same analogy about Wilson, the second-place team. The Mt. Hood Conference boys were not well represented Satur day. Gresham was 16th, with 408 points, and Reynolds was 18th. out of 18 teams, with 448 points The Pioneers started out the 1982 campaign with a new offensive line and quarterback. Close games, but loses nonetheless, against The Dalles. Parkrose and Centennial kept the season from being as suc cessful as Coach Greg O 'M eara and crew would have liked Sandy ended up 4-5 overall, 3-5 in the M t Hood Conference A fun 29-12 win over Reynolds, the last game of the season, allowed the Pioneers to end the season on a good note. A mud wrestling match afterward involving O 'M eara and several senioi s marked the end of what could at least be considered an nteresting season. Chuck Kearney, a 5-11 and 195-pound senior, rushed for a whopping 1,320 yards on 246 car ries, good for a 5.4 yard per carry a v e ra g e . He also scored 10 touchdowns. As football fans know, Scott Skip per. a 6-2 and 200-pound senior fullback, did a lot of the blocking But Skipper, also a track standout, ran for 427 yards on 81 carries, good for a 5.3 yards per carry a v e ra g e He s c o re d fo u r touchdowns. Others to contribute in the b a c k f ie ld w e re s e n io r B ill Bowman, who gained 12 yards on four carries, sophomore Brent Kearney, who gained 38 yards on 12 carries, M ark Tinjum , who gain ed 14 yards on two carries, and junior Ryan Coombs, who gained 50 yards on 12 carries. "1 was really pleased ” Dahlager had the best finish at the district meet last week, taking 12th (out of 41) on the beam Knudsen was also pleased with freshman Kelley Kai s 22nd place finish in the vault Kim Parmenter was 15th (out of 23) in all-around competition Dahlager was 18th and freshman Cindy Parmenter was 20th Our b a r s once again proved fatal,' Knudsen said Santb Reynolds Columbia David Douglas ran in one touchdown. Chuck Kearney completed three of four for 81 yards and two touchdowns Senior Todd Byron caught 18 of those passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns Tinjum caught five for 96 yards Chuck Kearney caught two for 17 yards Senior Russell Fork caught four for 65 yards Senior Mo Contreras caught one for four yards All in all, the Pioneers passed for 473 yards and rushed for another 1,826 Opponents gained 765 yards in the air to 1,402 on the ground Skipper punted 26 times for 690 yards, with an average of 26.5. Brent Kearney averaged 38.6 yards, having kicked off 29 times for 1,119 yards On d e fe n s e , S k ip p e r , a linebacker, made almost 11 tackles a game, with a high of 18 against Reynolds Junior Fran k McKinnis averag ed over eight tackles per outing, and senior Pat Baird averaged almost nine. Brinser averaged five tackles a game, and also nabbed six in terceptions during the season.
