JONES Pool Correspondent A policy was passed at the October meeting of the Hoodland Rural Fire Pro tection District that pro hibits persons from serving as both board members an d as v o lu n te e r firefighters Prior to the final vote, a discussion of the policy fueled angry comments from an audience compris ed largely of firefighters who opposed the move The discussions centered p rim arily around David Olson, a fire board member and volunteer firefighter with the department He acknowledged he has had problems with the other members of the board, as well as the fire chief He, as well as many others oppos ing the policy, said it was w ritten specifically to get him off the board or out of the department “ I think this policy was w r itte n because of a disagreement I had with oti.er bo^rd m em bers,” said Olson. Another board member, L u th e r R ay M ille r , a volunteer who serves the department as a fire in vestigator. was a supporter of the policy. G a ry C le la n d of B rig h tw o o d , a fo rm e r board member who served 10 years with the district, “ strongly" objected to the policy. Cleland said the policy makes him "feel uneasy," and he called it “ a real railroad job ’* V e r la R o g e rs , a Brightwood resident who was just recently appointed fill a position on the board, defended the policy She said it was “ actually not directed toward any pre sent board member ” She insisted the policy was written to avoid a potential conflict of interest, where a volun leer would be playing a role of employee and employer “ Just because something has been wrong for a 100 years doesn't mean we can 't co rrect i t , ” said Rogers Lane Wintermute, assis tant fire chief, said Olson was elected by the voters to the board because he was a volunteer “This policy, it seems to m e, goes a g a in s t the desires of the voters," said Wintermute. He was supported by another volunteer, L arry Elliott, who said it is an asset to have a volunteer on the board becau1" they und' -and the ['-oblems and needs of the district Elliott said this is better than having “people who don't know what end of the agency." said Gail W inter mute “ I f there is a pro blem, the public needs to know about it." Fire Chief Don Arm in trout requested that the board postpone taking a vote on the policy until a later date, so the legalities and potential impact could be researched further The board denied his re quest and voted, four to one, to implement the new policy immediately.
