I t ’s downright shocking to learn that lack of unanimity appears to include some members of the present (législature who seek re-election to serve in the Assembly scheduled to convene in regular session next January This conclusion is drawn following a re cent conference in Portland, during which some 200 participants explored the possibilities of achieving legislation that would require something called equal pay for comparable worth Admittedly a women's right issue, it's often confused with the established con cept of equal pay lor equal work Hut the two differ significantly While the latter is the law of the land, equal pay for com parable worth raises issues even the Na t lona I Academy of Sciences luis failed to unsnarl and the Supreme Court refused to consider In fact, mere consideration of such legislation by the Oregon Assembly could actually deter improvement of the state s job climate if not actually worsen the situation that's evolved during the last decade Leq islah vt Report trom the State Capital E X C L U S IV E to Oregon's Weekly New*» pa pert from Associated Oregon Indus tries Sponsors of such legislation only need look at the reaction of nationally syn dicated columnist William F Buckley to plant closure bills introduced during the last two sessions of our legislature "The only effect the Oregon bill would have, if ever it got through the leguilaute,’* he wrote "would be to cause a massive migration of companies from Oregon to states that practice economic literacy." Constitution recently, I ’s sure the general public know what that is. They learned about it in school I In it, I failed to find w rit ten anywhere a require ment of separation of church and state It does say that the government will not establish a state religion, thereby protec ting the rights of the dif fe re n t re lig io u s philosophies that found their way to this country and helped establish this nation Unlike the belief of some ultra liberal groups, there is nothing unconstitutional about American citizens in sisting the government re fle c t th e ir relig io u s values To refuse them the right to voice their opinion would he unconstitutional. It seems to be forgotten that those who founded this nation were themselves religious by inclination Adding the First Amend ment to protect that right of religious freedom proves their devotion So if there seems to be less motivation in this country to keep a "fear of God” in our society, then you c a n 't b la m e the atheists—only ourselves. They just worked harder at making this a Godless country, than those who do believe in God! W hen t r a d it io n a l religious celebrations by any faith sta rt to be trampled on by these ex tremist groups I spoke of and do it in the name of the C onstitution, then this country is sick. When we live in a country that screams society has no right to kill a convicted murderer and then sub sid izes a b o rtio n , w ell somehow the reasoning escapes me that one is alright and the other is wrong*I A hundred years ago the professional politician was unheard of. until the in dustrial revolution placed large «mounts of wealth in to small groups of in dividuals Indeed, their ideas did not necessarily work to the advantage of the people of this nation (Fedin-al Reserve). And by controlling who the people have to selected for elected offices, you control the government and the kind of legislation that cornea out of it! Ralph A Sander cock, Jr. Sandy Save colleges My generation holds the future in our hands and in our minds The question is: Will we be able to use our minds and ideas and able to grow in both areas7 Will we be able to go to college? College is an essential tool in preparing people to control the future of a coun t r y . H o w e v e r, if the economy holds to its pre sent course and Reagan pushes m o re fe d e r a l responsibilities onto state governments, price of col lege will become less at tainable to more people This measns that a larger percentage of people won’t get any education beyond high school Let's face it, a high school diploma is not enough education for so meone running our coun try If we allow the state to balance its budget by cut ting funds to colleges, someday only the very rich and athletes will attend col lege Who, then, will con trol our destiny? Many col lege athletes are moe con cerned with becoming pros than becoming leaders of tomorrow Besides, M ar cus Allen has a better chance running for a touchdown than running for president This leaves us with the rich in total control of our g o v e rn m e n t and our future This would be like regressing to co lo n ial times, when a college education was left for the rich We have come so far, why start over? It is the responsibility of each citizen to make sure this doesn't happen Write your congressman Let the government know how you feel Tell them you're con cerned with the future of our great nation Doug Baucom Senior, Sandy High MHCC musical I would like to show my appreciation for the great job the music department at Mount Hood Community College is doing, and whether you know it or not, they have really put our area on the map recently. The Mount Hood Com munity College jazz band has been collecting honors and opening a lot of eyes in the music world—not only in Oregon, but up and down the coast, as well They recently were judged best of all two-year college jazz bands on the Pacific Coast at a ja z z fe s tiv a l in Berkeley, Cal and also tied for second overall, missing first by a few points The band that beat them was loaded with graduate students and assistant directors, w hile Mount Hood’s band is comprised mainly of Portland-area m u sicians, s e ve ral of which are still seniors in high school Since I have two sons in the Mount Hood band, I traveled to Berkely to hear the competition, and I will say that when the Mount Hood band played, people listened If the people in the au dience didn’t know where Mount Hood was, they did after they heard Mount Hood's band play. What a thrill it was to see our area represented in such a pro fessional manner Too many times we hear a lot of negative things about our community col lege and vote down budgets, etc to cut them back But I hope we can ap preciate this fine music department we have in our "back yard" and support them when we can The first annual Mount Hood Festival of Jazz will be Aug 6 through 8 at the college stadiu m W ith many big names in jazz ap pearing. this will bring hundreds of people to our area and culd be one of the biggest events this area will ever see I hope we all will be p ro ud of this musical "happen ing" and give the music department and college the support they need Gerry Barker Sandy The Post gratefully acknowledges essays and w rit ten opinions from readers to appear on this page separate from the unbiased news reports on other pages of thia newspaper Your opinions generally will be printed a* letters to the editor while ours generally will appear as editorials Occa sionally, we are able to print guest editorista We a t tempt to print all signed letters of good taste, legible form and reasonable length Our deadline ta noon on Tuesdays.
