So he too ju m p e d in to help rescue the w h ite elk Th e tw o hu nters fought ag ain st th e depths of the la k e , but fin a lly th e ir strug gles ceased T h e b rav es, who w atch e d the ord e al fro m the shore, saw the th re e vanish into th e s e e m in g ly -b o tto m le s s depths o f th e m ir r o r -lik e w aters. T h a t n ig h t the sleep of the hu nting p a rtie s w as d istu rb ed b y th e ha u n tin g c a lls of tw o loons th a t liv e d in the reed s by th e side of th e lak e. Th en , as the m oon a p p e ared o v e r the horizon and cast its re fle c tio n on th e lak e, th e loons’ cries g re w lo uder an d m o re in tense as th ey m a d e th e ir w a y to th e m id d le o f th e la k e . T h e re , a w h ite sh ado w lik e fig u re flo a te d above th e m , ju s t beyond th e ir reach .
